US Election 2024: Public opinion focuses on the confrontation between the two vice presidents

Compared to recent elections, American public opinion shows signs of being more interested in the debate between the two Vice Presidential candidates in the 2024 US election.

On September 27-29, many American newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times , Washington Post, Fox News and Politico simultaneously published analytical articles about the relative positions of the two US vice presidential candidates, as well as about the impact of the debate on the race to the White House.

The move comes just ahead of the only debate between the two vice presidential candidates in this year's US presidential election, Governor Tim Walz (Democrat - Minnesota) and Senator JD Vance (Republican - Ohio) on October 1.

According to polls conducted just before the debate by AP /NORC and New York Times /Sienna College, Governor Walz is more popular with voters than Senator Vance (with approval ratings of 40% and 25%, respectively).

Notably, Mr. Walz has a higher reputation than Mr. Vance among both female and male voters. This is a positive sign for the Democrats, because of the two presidential candidates, Mr. Donald Trump is considered to have an advantage in mobilizing votes from male voters in general.

Both Mr. Walz and Mr. Vance will attempt to “compensate” for their running mate’s “shortcomings” — Mr. Walz will offer substantive policy moves, while Mr. Vance will provide logical arguments.

Currently, Democratic Party vice presidential candidate Walz is considered to have a higher chance of winning than his Republican opponent in the upcoming debate due to his natural charisma and extensive experience in politics.

However, the articles warn that they do not “disdain” Mr. Vance because he is a sharp, intelligent person who has made remarkable progress in his rhetorical ability in just the past two years and has a talent for “interpreting Mr. Trump's statements in a way that voters can somewhat understand.”

Many articles commented that the gap between the Harris-Walz and Trump-Vance factions is so close that the debate between the two Vice Presidential candidates, an event considered a "side dish", could have a sudden impact on the situation of the race to the White House.

In addition, in the context of former President Trump refusing to debate Vice President Harris a second time, the October 1 debate will likely be the last interaction between the two campaigns in front of voters nationwide.
