On June 17, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital informed that the hospital's doctors had just re-examined the girl whose hair got caught in a wheel and completely peeled off her scalp. She has miraculously recovered with hair that is longer than her buttocks.

Previously, in December 2020, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received the case of an 8-year-old child in Hai Phong who was being taken out by his family on a tricycle and his hair got caught in the wheel while lying on the back of the tricycle. Because his hair was very long and thick, when he panicked, the child sat up and his entire scalp was peeled off.

At the time of the accident, the family saw the child's scalp peeled off from the ear, around the forehead, to the other side of the head and then to the back of the neck, exposing the skull. The child was taken to Viet Tiep Hospital (Hai Phong) for emergency treatment and then transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

Dr. Bui Mai Anh - Department of Maxillofacial and Aesthetic Surgery said that scalp grafting surgery in children is difficult because the blood vessels are small, only about 0.6-0.7mm, the risk of post-graft thrombosis is quite high, requiring techniques as well as surgical equipment. Thanks to the experienced team at Viet Duc Hospital using a microsurgery to graft 1 artery and 2 veins, the grafting was successful. After just over 10 days of surgery, hair has grown back in the grafted scalp area.

After the successful scalp transplant at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, the family always took the child for follow-up visits on time so that the doctor could monitor the recovery process and give timely advice on daily activities. Thanks to that, after nearly 4 years, the child has had good treatment results, with long and beautiful hair.

Looking at the patient's achievements today, no one can imagine that just a few years ago he had such a serious accident.

Dr. Bui Mai Anh directly examined the child and shared that the surgical wound at the severed position after reconnection healed well, was not raised, was not painful or itchy, so no special care was needed.

Associate Professor Nguyen Hong Ha - Head of the Department of Maxillofacial and Aesthetic Surgery (Viet Duc Friendship Hospital) said that the department has performed many complicated scalp reattachment cases including multiple traumas, along with rare cases of severed scalps in children due to their common occurrence in work accidents.

The girl has kept her hair long and uncut since her scalp was reattached. The patient's family was very excited to meet the doctor who performed the successful surgery.
