Patient TTKT (14 years old, Can Tho City) unfortunately has congenital heart disease and needs early intervention, so his family took him to Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital.

Here, after performing a Doppler echocardiogram, doctors determined that the child had an atrial septal defect with a hole size that could be treated with percutaneous parachute intervention, a minimally invasive procedure that helps close the atrial septal defect without opening the chest.

MSc. Dr. Quach Tan Dat - Deputy Head of the Department of Cardiology, Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital - said: "We performed a procedure to completely close the atrial septal defect for patient T. in about 45 minutes. Thus, the patient did not need to undergo open heart surgery. After the procedure, the patient's health was stable, he recovered quickly and was discharged for outpatient check-up after 24 hours."

In fact, not all cases of atrial septal defect require open heart surgery. The advantage of the modern parachute closure method is that many pediatric patients can avoid major surgery, ensuring aesthetics and long-term quality of life. This is a safe, minimally invasive method, suitable for many patients, especially children and adolescents.

The success of this case has opened up opportunities for children with congenital heart disease in the Mekong Delta to access a minimally invasive, safe method that optimizes recovery time after surgery.

According to the Ministry of Health , each year in Vietnam there are about 10,000 - 12,000 newborns with congenital heart disease, of which atrial septal defect is one of the most common forms.

There is a "golden time" for treating these defects - the stage when the disease has not yet caused severe pulmonary hypertension, has not reversed blood flow through the heart, and has not weakened the heart.

If detected early and intervened during this stage, the treatment process will be simpler, less risky, have a high recovery rate and minimize future complications.

On the contrary, if detected late, the disease can progress severely, putting great pressure on the heart and lungs, making treatment more complicated, reducing effectiveness and increasing the risk of complications.
