On June 6, Dr. Chung Tan Dinh, Director of Soc Trang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, said that the unit had just received and successfully operated on a 2-year-old boy who was hospitalized due to swallowing a fish bone while eating.
“This boy loves eating fish. Somehow, he swallowed a red tilapia bone while eating. Luckily, he was discovered in time and successfully treated,” said Dr. Dinh.

Previously, baby NHQ (2 years old, living in Long Phu district, Soc Trang province) was transferred by his family to Soc Trang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital in a state of crying, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting.
The doctor's examination showed that baby Q's appendix was inflamed, with signs of surrounding infiltration. The doctors determined that this was a serious case and required emergency surgery.
During the surgery, the doctor discovered a foreign object about 4cm in size, suspected to be a fish bone, piercing the cecum. The location of the piercing foreign object showed signs of thickening and inflammation, with a lot of pus appearing.
The doctor performed an appendectomy and removed the foreign object from the cecum. After surgery, baby Q.'s health was stable.
According to doctors at Soc Trang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, the case of a 2-year-old child swallowing a fish bone causing intestinal perforation and peritonitis is quite rare. Fortunately, the family took the child to the hospital in time. If there had been any further delay, the abdominal infection could have progressed to a more serious stage, even threatening his life.
