Hanoi 10th grade literature test: Teachers worry about low differentiation, good students are at a disadvantage

(Dan Tri) - Literature teachers assessed that the 10th grade entrance exam for Hanoi's literature subject has a clear orientation but low differentiation, which can easily disadvantage excellent students.

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Mai - literature teacher at Newton Secondary and High School - assessed that this year's 10th grade literature exam in Hanoi was quite "easy" and within the students' ability.

In the reading comprehension section, the questions have more suggestions, so students do not have to spend time thinking about how to answer. In particular, question number 5, which is worth 1 point, has a simple, easy-to-do request: "Please share a simple happiness of yours". When answering the question, the student who can explain why he or she cherishes that happiness will get the maximum score.

"The questions are so clear, it's hard to classify students," Ms. Mai said.

In the writing section, Ms. Mai assessed the social argumentation issue as familiar and close.

"The introduction in the thesis is clear, even giving the candidate an extended discussion, the counter-argument in the sentence "However, not everyone feels that".

With this guidance, average students also have no difficulty handling the assignment requirements.

My students all brag after the exam that they did well. But the teacher is worried. Because when the test is not highly differentiated, it is a disadvantage for the students who do well," Ms. Mai shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hen - a literature exam preparation teacher - commented that, on the positive side, the 10th grade literature exam in Hanoi closely followed the review limit. The reading comprehension part was suitable for the genre's characteristics. The social argumentation questions raised familiar issues, suitable for the psychology of school-age students, and also made it easy for students to express their thoughts, opinions and personal experiences.

However, Ms. Hen believes that the 400-word limit is a difficult factor for candidates. Candidates must have a solid writing mindset, the ability to express themselves concisely, succinctly and logically.

In addition, Ms. Hen said that the literary essay question is not easy to get points.

"Average students can point out the artistic devices in the last five verses of Happiness, but to analyze the profound meaning of that poem requires the ability to perceive literature as well as the skill of commenting on and feeling literary works. Only good students can do this," said Ms. Hen.
