Truong Sa Island infirmary treats fisherman suffering from decompression sickness due to scuba diving

Early morning of May 20, Truong Sa Island Infirmary received and treated a fisherman transferred from Da Tay A Island Infirmary. The patient was Mr. Nguyen Dinh Diem (26 years old, Binh Thuan province) - a crew member of fishing boat BTh 97986 TS of Binh Thuan province.

On May 19, Mr. Diem dived at a depth of about 20m. After surfacing for about 10 minutes, the fisherman showed signs of chest and abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, muscle pain in all four limbs, and spots under the skin; he was given oxygen in a canoe and taken to the Da Tay A Island Infirmary for emergency treatment. Doctors at the Da Tay A Island Infirmary gave the patient oxygen, intravenous fluids, and pain relief... At 2:30 a.m. on May 20, the patient was transferred to the Truong Sa Island Infirmary. The patient was conscious, responsive, had pain in the chest and abdominal wall, and had difficulty breathing...

Military medics on the island treat patients.

After receiving the patient, the doctors reported to their superiors and conducted an examination; diagnosed the patient with type II decompression sickness, respiratory failure, and paralysis of both legs due to deep diving for 20 hours and performed emergency treatment and treatment for the patient. After consultation with Military Hospital 175, the prognosis was very serious. The doctors and nurses continued to treat according to the protocol concluded by the consultation with Military Hospital 175; closely monitored the patient and promptly reported and requested to be transported to shore by helicopter for continued treatment.
