On June 6, the People's Court of Dong Thap province opened a first-instance trial, sentencing defendant Tran Thanh Luan (26 years old, residing in Tan Khanh Dong commune, Sa Dec city, Dong Thap) to 19 years in prison for robbery. According to the indictment, due to debt, Tran Thanh Luan had the idea of robbing a bank to pay off his debt and for personal expenses. Luan went online to order a lighter shaped like a roller gun; bought tape, electric wire, found plastic pipes, paper boxes, and circuit boards to make two fake bombs.

At about 4:00 p.m. on November 15, 2022, Luan carried a cloth bag containing 2 fake bombs and a fake bomb trigger, and put the revolver-shaped lighter in his pocket, then walked from home to catch a bus to Sacombank 's Sa Dec Transaction Office to observe the bank to find an opportunity to enter and commit robbery.

Taking advantage of the end of the day when the bank was empty, Luan used a gun and a fake bomb to threaten and intimidate bank employees and security guards to steal 1.75 billion VND, put it in a bag, and tried to leave the bank when he was arrested by the bank security guards and handed over to the police for handling.
