Recently, Quang Binh General Hospital ( Ha Giang ) received a case of a 61-year-old male patient with nasal congestion and nosebleeds for 2 weeks without finding the cause.
Here, doctors discovered that the patient had a living foreign object in the nasal turbinate. If a living foreign object is left for a long time, it can penetrate deeper, causing pneumonia, necrosis, and even death. Doctors removed the living foreign object from the patient using a nasal endoscopy. The foreign object removed was a live leech about 5cm long and as big as a chopstick tip.
A leech as big as a chopstick tip, about 5cm long, was removed from the patient's nose (Photo provided by the hospital).
Doctors at the hospital said that this was a case of a patient with a living foreign body in a rather complicated location. The leech crawled into the nasal turbinate, and over time, it grew larger and larger, sucking blood, causing the patient's nasal turbinate to become inflamed and ulcerated, leading to nosebleeds.
From the above case, doctors recommend that people should not use unsafe water sources from streams for drinking and daily activities, to prevent leeches and ticks from entering the body. When there are any unusual signs of health, they should go to a medical facility for early diagnosis and timely treatment.
