At 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024, Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) in collaboration with Chum Nho Cinema will bring a movie screening event for children with the century-old movie "The Kid".
“The Kid” is a famous silent comedy film starring comedian Charlie Chaplin. Released in 1921, “The Kid” was also the first feature film that Charlie Chaplin directed, wrote, and produced.
“The Kid” brings tears to many viewers when telling the story of a vagrant teaching an abandoned child how to survive in society and how to grow up without a family.
The film tells the story of an abandoned child found by The Little Tramp, a vagrant. After many unsuccessful attempts to return the child to its mother, the Tramp decides to take care of the child and names him John.
The two lived happily together in love and poverty until the authorities discovered that they were not biological father and son. At that time, the police insisted on sending John to an orphanage, despite both of their many desperate attempts to escape.
“The Kid” is considered the greatest film of the silent era. It is marked by a sensitive and compassionate soul and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2011.
Charlie Chaplin was a famous English actor, comedian, filmmaker and composer, one of the most important figures in the film industry.
Charlie Chaplin's jokes were often measured and intelligent, providing a thoughtful backdrop. His protagonists lived in poverty and were often treated badly, but remained kind and optimistic, and acted seriously in the face of comic events.
With his baggy clothes representing his social status and his signature bowler hat representing the elegance of a gentleman, Charlie wanted to bring a character that no matter how miserable his life was, he was still a man of dignity.
