Attending the reception and working session with Minister Dang Quoc Khanh were Mr. Le Ngoc Tuan, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, and leaders of the Department of Climate Change, Department of Environmental Pollution Control; Vietnam Sea and Islands Department; Legal Department; Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry Office.
On the side of UNDP in Vietnam, there was Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Vietnam; and professional staff of UNDP in Vietnam.
In an exchange with Ms. Ramla Khalidi, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh acknowledged and highly appreciated the cooperation and support of UNDP for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in particular and Vietnam in general in the recent past. At the same time, he hoped that through Ms. Ramla Khalidi, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and UNDP would jointly promote the sharing of information on areas and cooperation activities between the two sides, especially in implementing the results of COP26 and the fields of environmental protection, biodiversity, ocean plastic waste management and circular economy in line with the new practical situation.
At the meeting, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh and Ms. Ramla Khalidi discussed cooperation programs as well as UNDP's support for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in areas such as establishing a domestic carbon market connected to the international market; implementing the commitment to reduce net emissions by 2050 and implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change; cooperation in developing the Mekong Delta to adapt to climate change, etc.
Also related to climate change, in the past time, UNDP has been very active with the Ministry in preparing to implement the JETP Political Declaration. The Minister hopes that in the coming time, UNDP will actively work with the Secretariat, with Minister Dang Quoc Khanh as the Head of the Secretariat, to implement the Political Declaration to establish a partnership for equitable energy transition to develop a Resource Mobilization Plan.
In addition, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh and the UNDP Representative in Vietnam discussed the cooperation and support of UNDP's international experience for Vietnam in perfecting institutions and policies to promote energy transition; developing marine spatial planning; developing circular economy ; further promoting mechanisms and agreements on carbon markets, carbon credits... as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, methane gas while still ensuring food security in the current context of climate change...
Thanking Minister Dang Quoc Khanh for taking the time to meet her, Ms. Ramla Khalidi said that UNDP always promotes the initiative of each country in sustainable development, and affirmed UNDP's commitment to support Vietnam in general and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in particular in the fields of energy transition, environmental protection, biodiversity, ocean plastic waste management and circular economy development towards the goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions, effective response to climate change, etc.
Currently, UNPP has been working with units of the Ministry such as the Department of International Cooperation, the Department of Climate Change, the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment, the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands, the Department of Environmental Pollution Control... In the coming time, UNDP hopes to continue to receive better coordination in addition to implementing joint projects, and will also receive technical and policy guidance so that UNDP can complete its programs and projects, and at the same time have support solutions in terms of policies, experience, and resource mobilization to transfer to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Regarding the cooperation programs being implemented, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh and Ms. Ramla Khalidi agreed to have a reporting and urging mechanism to achieve the best results, and at the same time hoped that the cooperation between the two agencies would become more and more effective.
