Vietnam Volleyball petitions FIVB to avoid recurrence of incidents

To avoid another unfortunate situation like the one at the 2025 Women's U21 World Cup, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will try to find a solution besides filing a complaint to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team has been in an uproar in recent days over the news of an unqualified athlete being banned from competing in the U21 Women's Volleyball World Cup. In addition, the Vietnamese U21 team was also disqualified from the matches in which this athlete participated.

From being able to participate in the round of 16, coach Nguyen Trong Linh's team had to compete in the ranking round from 17 - 24. Currently, they have passed the first round and are aiming for the ranking round from 17 - 20.

Vietnam Volleyball Federation has sent 2 complaints.

In response to this incident, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV) has filed a complaint with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the body that issued the above penalty. Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Le Tri Truong - General Secretary of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation - said that he has submitted a full complaint and provided the necessary documents.

"We have sent two complaints to FIVB and now we can only wait. They have not given any answer and have not set a date for a response."

Mr. Truong said that all document checking procedures had been carried out before the tournament. The Vietnam Volleyball Federation provided all documents of the athletes according to regulations.

As for FIVB suddenly stepping in right in the middle of the tournament, and at a sensitive time in the group stage, it has never happened before.

The federation's general secretary said: "Our point of view is not to change the results of the Vietnam U21 team, but to prove that we did nothing wrong.

According to the principle, when FIVB has new or additional regulations, they must inform the national federations to prepare and advise the clubs and athletes. But this time they did not make any announcement.

The Vietnam U21 women's volleyball team has competed since the 2024 qualifying round with these athletes and complete records. But this time, they suddenly asked to re-check their personal records.

The checks should have been carried out before the tournament or at the beginning of the tournament if necessary, and not at the end of the group stage. We believe that this process is unfair and needs to be explained.

This is not the fault of the athletes or the federation, because we have completed the documents correctly and completely. The cancellation of the results is unreasonable. The federation hopes that FIVB will clearly explain these issues."

Worry about the national team at the World Cup

Initially, Thai and Indonesian media reported that two Vietnamese athletes were asked to have their records checked. However, according to Mr. Le Tri Truong, there were three people who had to go through this process. Among them, two athletes were not allowed to compete in the final match of the group stage.

Finally, there is only 1 case of ban. Therefore, the Vietnam U21 women's volleyball team now has only 11 athletes who can play.

The problem of these athletes is related to birth registration because some people's birth registration is 1 year late, some people's birth registration is 2 years late. VFV has explained in detail about the social and specific circumstances in Vietnam in the past that led to this problem.

"After we explained, they also did not have any further comments on the issue of the records. The fact that they then banned two athletes from competing in one match, and then finally declared one athlete ineligible are points that the federation is also wondering about and asking for clarification."

The unfortunate incident of U21 Vietnam happened just a few weeks before the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship takes place in Thailand on August 22. In this tournament, it will be the national team's turn to compete.

Therefore, many domestic fans are concerned that the team is at risk of falling into a similar situation. Discussing this issue, Mr. Truong said that the federation will work with the coaching staff and athletes to learn from experience in the future.

"This is a difficult issue. In principle, FIVB must have a clear written request if they want to check and evaluate a certain issue. Only then will we have a basis to recommend to athletes and clubs. There are mandatory regulations, but there are also voluntary regulations. FIVB has never issued any document stating that providing this detailed personal information is mandatory for review.

However, from its perspective, the federation is also discussing with the coaching staff and athletes about this issue. Of course there will be difficulties because some matters are related to personal privacy. The parties will sit together to learn from experience and review to avoid similar cases from happening."
