While China’s big tech companies and startups have been quick to roll out AI models and related applications, convincing domestic users to pay for these services has been difficult, forcing many companies to look abroad for opportunities.

Some companies have had some success expanding overseas. For example, Alibaba Group launched SeaLLMs, an AI model specifically for the Southeast Asian market.
TikTok owner ByteDance has also introduced a number of AI apps aimed at global consumers, such as “AI homework assistant” Gauth. Startup Minimax also launched its Talkie AI app for international users.
According to experts, overseas markets offer greater potential as users are willing to pay for software and there are more experts available to provide valuable feedback. Companies like Motiff have quickly attracted users in many different countries thanks to their AI-powered interface design tool.
However, with tensions between the US and China in the technology sector, many Chinese companies have had to change their strategies to adapt to the complex political environment. Some companies have even had to move their headquarters abroad to avoid attention.
