Google advised users not to make any changes to Google Drive as it could make things worse. The search giant has fixed the issue and updated its support documentation, along with instructions for recovering lost Google Drive files. Google said users should update to the latest desktop version of Drive on both Windows and Mac.
According to Google, to restore files on Google Drive, users must first update the Drive software for their computer to version 85.0.13.0 or higher, select the Drive icon, press and hold the Shift key, select Settings and finally select "Recover from backups".

This will launch the data recovery tool. There will be two types of messages, one will indicate that no backups were found. When a backup is available, the software will warn you of one of two more messages that the backup process is complete. The other is a message that there is not enough disk space, at which point you need to free up space so that you can run the backup tool again.
If you have a larger drive, Google provides a command line interface to specify different file restore paths. This is useful if you backed up your Drive account folder to a different location on your computer or want to restore files to a specific folder.
Once the restore is complete, users will see a Google Drive Recovery folder on their desktop containing unsynced files. If they run the restore tool and encounter issues, they should submit feedback via the Drive desktop app with the hashtag #DFD84 and choose to include diagnostic logs.
