Mbappe is going through a difficult time at Real Madrid. |
After a turbulent season, the Normandy team officially bid farewell to Ligue 2 for the 2024/25 season, sadly relegated to the French National League (Third Division) after a humiliating 0-3 defeat at home against Martigues on April 19th.
The arrival of superstar Mbappe, who bought the club last September, was expected to bring a breath of fresh air and lead Caen back to its glory days. However, baffling decisions from the management, particularly in coaching, have plunged the team into an inescapable crisis.
Before the season began, Caen was considered one of the potential contenders for promotion to Ligue 1. With the financial resources from Mbappe and the expectations of the fans, the team promised to make strong progress.
However, the reality was much harsher. From the very first rounds, Caen displayed a lackluster performance, languishing at the bottom of the league table and showing no signs of recovery.
One of the main causes of this disaster has been attributed to misguided decisions in the selection and replacement of coaches. The height of this incomprehension was the appointment of Baltazar in January. A strategist completely unfamiliar with French football, with no notable achievements in his career, was given the opportunity to "save" the sinking ship.
As a result, the situation not only failed to improve but actually worsened. Under Baltazar, Caen suffered a run of seven consecutive defeats.
Caen fans' patience ran out. During the crucial match against Martigues in the 31st round of Ligue 1, a bitter banner was displayed at the Michel D'Ornano stadium: "Kylian Mbappe, Caen is not your toy." This scathing message reflected the extreme disappointment with the Real Madrid star's management of the team.
Mbappe has invested in Caen, but running a football team is not simple. |
Despite his busy schedule in the Champions League, Mbappe still took the time to visit the team in March, after their impressive victory in the European competition. However, his brief appearance could not work miracles, nor was it enough to lift the spirits and change the players' poor form.
In an effort to help Caen avoid relegation, Mbappe made a change on the coaching bench by bringing in Michel Der Zakarian, an experienced coach with a deep understanding of French football, to the club in February. However, all efforts to salvage the situation came too late.
Now, Kylian Mbappé faces a far greater challenge than anything he's ever experienced on the pitch. The task of rebuilding the team from the ruins, reviving the players' morale, and bringing Caen back to Ligue 2 next season is no easy feat.
This is certainly a costly lesson for the French star in his first attempt at owning a football club. Enthusiasm and financial resources alone are not enough; sound decision-making and a deep understanding of football are also necessary.
The disaster at Caen was a costly wake-up call for Kylian Mbappé's ambitions in a managerial role. The future of the Normandy club now depends on his next steps.
