Mbappe is going through difficult days at Real Madrid. |
After just one tumultuous season, the Normandy team officially had to say goodbye to Ligue 2 in the 2024/25 season, sadly relegated to the French Third Division (National) after a humiliating 0-3 home defeat to Martigues on April 19.
The arrival of superstar Mbappe, who bought the club last September, was expected to bring a breath of fresh air, bringing Caen back to its glory days. However, confusing decisions from the board, especially in coaching, have pushed the team into a crisis with no way out.
Before the season started, Caen was considered one of the potential candidates for promotion to Ligue 1. With the financial potential of Mbappe and the expectations of the fans, the team promises to progress strongly.
However, the reality is much harsher. Right from the first rounds, Caen showed a weak performance, sinking deep into the bottom group of the rankings and showing no signs of recovery.
One of the main reasons for this disaster is pointed out to be the wrong decisions in choosing and changing coaches. The climax of the confusion was the appointment of Baltazar in January. A strategist completely unfamiliar with French football, without any notable achievements in his career, was given the opportunity to "save" the sinking ship.
As a result, the situation not only did not improve but also became worse. Under Baltazar, Caen went on a seven-match losing streak.
Caen fans' patience is running out. During the decisive match against Martigues in the 31st round of Ligue 1, a bitter banner was unfurled at the Michel D'Ornano stadium: "Kylian Mbappe, Caen is not your toy". This strong message expressed the utmost disappointment in the Real Madrid star's management of the team.
Mbappe has invested in Caen, but running a football team is not simple. |
Despite his busy Champions League schedule, Mbappe still took the time to visit the team in March, after an impressive victory in Europe. However, his brief appearance could not bring about a miracle, not enough to lift the spirits and change the poor form of the players.
In an effort to help Caen avoid relegation, Mbappe made a change on the coaching bench by bringing in Michel Der Zakarian, an experienced and knowledgeable French football player, to the club in February. However, all efforts to save the team came too late.
Now Kylian Mbappé faces a much bigger challenge than he has ever experienced on the pitch. The task of rebuilding the team from the rubble, lifting the players' spirits and returning Caen to Ligue 2 next season is no easy task.
This is certainly a valuable lesson for the French star in his first attempt at the role of a football club owner. Enthusiasm and financial resources are not enough, but also need wise decisions and a deep understanding of football.
The disaster in Caen was a costly wake-up call for Kylian Mbappé's managerial ambitions. The future of the Normandy club will now depend on his next steps.
