In recent days, taking advantage of the damage caused by storm No. 3, many people have posted on Zalo and Facebook pages to scam and call for donations to support people in the storm-hit areas. People need to be alert when receiving information to avoid falling into the above scam trap.

Many fake fanpages appear
On September 11, the People's Committee of Phu Tho province announced that a fake fanpage of the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee (Phu Tho) appeared on Facebook. The scammers used images and information similar to the official pages of Lam Thao district to call on benefactors to donate and transfer money to support families and victims affected by the Phong Chau bridge collapse.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Toan, Chairman of the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee, affirmed that this agency is focusing on coordinating with sectors and localities to urgently deploy measures to respond to floods and storms to ensure the safety of people's lives and property. Up to now, the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee has not yet mobilized support for victims and families of victims.
“The information that the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee called for support for those affected by the Phong Chau Bridge collapse on Facebook is incorrect. People need to be vigilant and not transfer money to personal accounts on fake Fanpages. Immediately after discovering the incident, the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee coordinated with the police to verify and clarify the related subjects,” said Mr. Nguyen Manh Toan.

Previously, on September 7, the Facebook page of the Quang Ninh Red Cross Society posted a warning about fraudulent fanpages and impersonations calling for support for people affected by storm No. 3. Up to now, despite being reported by many people and reported by the press, the fake fanpage still exists, continuing to call on people to transfer money for charity.
Social networks have also been spreading fake news posted by a fake Viettel Telecom fanpage in recent days. This fanpage said that people in areas affected by storms, floods, power outages, and no internet can enter the syntax and send it to 191 to use Viettel's free internet. To increase persuasiveness, the subjects also noted that the syntax only applies to areas affected by storms, floods, power outages, and internet connection loss. Viettel Telecom representatives have denied the above false information.
Sophisticated form of fraud using AI images
Recently, security expert Ngo Minh Hieu (Hieu PC) pointed out a number of new scams in recent days. Taking advantage of the time when the whole country is looking towards the northern mountainous provinces that have been severely affected by floods, many bad guys will post articles on social networks with pitiful images created by AI. Then the bad guys will take advantage of people's sympathy to trick them into transferring money for charity.

Some people have taken advantage of people's concerns to spread fake information and false news on social media sites about the flood situation. Specifically, on September 10-11, many accounts posted on social media about the dike breach that trapped many people in heavily flooded areas such as Vu Thu, Kien Xuong, Dong Hung, Hung Ha (Thai Binh province), causing public panic.
The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue of Thai Binh province affirmed that this information is false, and that the national dike system is currently safe. With the complicated flood situation, people should not be subjective, but need to be alert and selective when accessing information, especially not to believe or spread unverified information.

Similarly, in Ba Dinh district (Hanoi), scammers used images and information at locations damaged by storms and floods, impersonating the Women's Union of Quan Thanh, Nguyen Trung Truc, and Truc Bach wards to call for donations from benefactors, transfer money to personal accounts and then appropriate it.
The People's Committee of Ba Dinh District recommends that people should be vigilant and not send donations or support to victims to accounts of unknown origin. At the same time, it is necessary to promote the sharing of information warning of fraud so that people can be vigilant. Detecting and reporting fake and fraudulent pages is also a way to contribute to protecting the community.
Be alert when doing charity
Security expert Vu Ngoc Son, Technical Director of National Cyber Security Technology Joint Stock Company (NCS), Head of Technology Research Department of National Cyber Security Association, said that taking advantage of disasters and natural disasters to commit fraud is quite common in the world. Therefore, users should be careful when receiving information on social networks, to avoid transferring charity money by mistake.
When receiving information online calling for donations or selling goods to help fight storms and floods, it is necessary to verify the content carefully. It is necessary to follow the official media to know the official organizations and reliable addresses that receive money and goods to support people in localities that suffered severe consequences of the storm. People and organizations need to promote the sharing of warning information widely so that everyone can raise their vigilance. Detecting and reporting fake and fraudulent pages is also a way to contribute to protecting the community.
