At the meeting to evaluate the implementation of Resolution No. 01/NQ-CP of the Government and the socio -economic situation in August, the work of preventing, combating and responding to storms and floods, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Giang - Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province mentioned the above issue.
According to Mr. Giang, Tra Khuc bridge is 60 years old, there must be experts to seriously assess the current condition of the bridge and have a plan to prepare for the rainy season.
“During the rainy season, high water levels and floods can easily cause accidents like the Phong Chau bridge in Phu Tho province recently. Ensuring the safety of bridge works to protect people's lives and property is a very important task in the last months of the year. The Provincial People's Committee has also just issued a Directive to strengthen measures to ensure the safety of traffic bridges during the rainy and stormy season of 2024,” Mr. Giang emphasized.
On September 14, through our actual observations, Tra Khuc 1 Bridge currently has some concrete pile foundations that are peeling, exposed steel, rusted, and showing signs of deterioration. However, on the bridge surface, there are many vehicles traveling back and forth every day.
Mr. Tran Thoi (Truong Quang Trong ward, Quang Ngai city) said: Every day I ride my motorbike back and forth on Tra Khuc bridge but I feel very insecure because the bridge is too old and degraded. People really hope that the authorities at all levels will pay attention and soon build a new bridge to ensure the safety of people and vehicles passing through the bridge.
Mr. Trinh Quoc Phuong (Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province) said: Tra Khuc bridge is narrow but there are many vehicles passing through here, so it is difficult and has the potential for traffic accidents. The bridge is also degraded, if the local government builds a new bridge, the people will welcome and enthusiastically support it.
Regarding this issue, Mr. Nguyen Phong - Director of the Department of Transport of Quang Ngai province said that Tra Khuc 1 bridge was built in 1964 on the old National Highway 1A managed by Road Management Area V. In 2004, the Ministry of Transport completed the construction of the Quang Ngai City bypass, now National Highway 1, and Tra Khuc 2 bridge. Tra Khuc 1 bridge has now been handed over to Quang Ngai City for management, and the provincial Department of Transport is implementing measures to ensure traffic safety.
According to Mr. Phong, Tra Khuc 1 bridge has been under construction for a long time, so people's concerns about the bridge collapsing before the rainy season are well-founded. However, Tra Khuc 1 bridge is located downstream of Tra Khuc River, close to the sea, the geology of Tra Khuc 1 bridge is sand, different from Phong Chau bridge, in addition, the flood flow speed to Tra Khuc 1 is not too large, the possibility of eroding the piers is very low. Currently, the unit is closely monitoring the safety of Tra Khuc 1 bridge; at the same time, there is a plan to prohibit traffic on the bridge if there are unusual signs during the rainy season, to ensure the safety of people's property and lives.
“In 2014, Tra Khuc 1 Bridge was repaired. In 2023, the Quang Ngai Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board organized a competition for the architectural design of Tra Khuc 1 Bridge. The architectural design "Tra River Imprint" won first prize and was selected to build a new bridge. Currently, the provincial Department of Transport has included Tra Khuc 1 Bridge in the list of medium-term public investment projects for the period 2026-2031. In the coming period, the province will allocate resources to invest in the construction of a new Tra Khuc 1 Bridge so that people can travel conveniently and safely,” said Mr. Phong.
Tra Khuc 1 Bridge is 640m long, with 19 spans, each span is 24m. After inspecting the weak bridge, in 2015, Quang Ngai banned trucks from crossing the bridge. Currently, the authorities only allow cars, motorbikes, and pedestrians to cross the bridge.
