Along both banks of the Bai Ca River in Tinh Khe and Dong Son communes, there are nearly a dozen abandoned shipwrecks that have been abandoned for many years. In Sa Huynh ward, a similar situation occurs right at the fishing port, along the shore and under Thanh Duc bridge. The shipwrecks block the flow, making it difficult to observe when the tide is high, causing passing boats to collide or have wood debris caught in the propellers, causing damage.
The reason for this situation is that many ships have been wrecked, burned or severely damaged by storms, fishermen's ships have lost business and are no longer able to be repaired, or have been repossessed by banks but not yet liquidated. The cost of salvage, dismantling and re-transportation is too high, causing ship owners to abandon their vessels on the spot.
According to the provincial Department of Fisheries and Sea Islands, although the Provincial People's Committee has directed to completely handle the problem since 2023, there are still many remaining wrecks. In the context of the approaching storm season, salvaging and clearing damaged ships at seaports, river mouths and fishing ports is an urgent requirement to ensure safe waterways, creating conditions for ships to dock to buy and sell seafood and avoid storms.
In addition, local authorities need to arrange a gathering area for abandoned vessels and link this task with the fight against illegal fishing (IUU), contributing to preserving the beauty and marine environment.
