Warning about the dangerous 'mouth-taping' trend on TikTok

The 'mouth tape' trend is becoming increasingly popular on TikTok, suggesting using a special type of breathable medical tape to cover the mouth while sleeping.

In thousands of videos on the platform, influencers claim mouth tape is a "simple trick" that can solve a host of problems — like slimming the jaw, increasing energy, improving dental hygiene, and curing sleep apnea.

According to Science Alert, a group of doctors and scientists from the London Health Sciences Center and the University of Saskatchewan Medical School have just published a comprehensive review of the 10 most relevant studies, synthesizing data from 213 patients, to assess whether mouth taping is actually safe, let alone worth pursuing.

Two studies have shown improvements in patients with mild sleep apnea, but overall, the researchers say, there is no solid evidence to support the claims made by mouth-taping enthusiasts.

“Several other studies have shown that mouth taping makes no difference, and have even suggested potential risks such as suffocation if nasal obstruction is present,” the authors write.

In addition, all 10 existing studies on oral adhesives were of poor quality for various reasons, such as lack of follow-up with participants, unrepresentative sample groups, and factors that could have influenced the results.

"Mouth taping can have serious health consequences for people with nasal obstruction who are trying to use it to improve mouth breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, or sleep-disordered breathing."

If you have to breathe through your mouth due to a physical obstruction in your nose such as sinusitis, a deviated septum or nasal polyps, then mouth taping will definitely not help.

Band-aid solutions like these on social media can also delay or sidetrack patients from treating the real cause of the problem.

“In groups of patients with nasal obstruction leading to mouth breathing or sleep apnea, there is little evidence of clinical benefit,” the study was published in the journal PLOS One.
