Francisco Oropesa, 38, is accused of opening fire on his neighbors after being told to stop practicing shooting an AR-15-style rifle late Friday because it woke up a child. The victims included an 8-year-old boy.

“Right now, we have no leads,” FBI Houston special agent James Smith told reporters Sunday.

San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said more than 200 police and security officers are going door-to-door looking for the suspect or any tips on how to find him. Officials are offering an $80,000 reward for information leading to the suspect.

When the incident occurred, officials received a call from a home in Cleveland, about 45 miles north of Houston, at 11:31 p.m. Friday. Capers said Saturday that the suspect walked out of the home Friday night and began firing multiple shots in his yard, after which several victims came out and told him to stop.

Both sides then returned to their homes. Oropesa "loaded his gun and walked" into the street, then "entered his neighbor's house and started shooting," Capers said, adding that most of the victims were shot in the head, "almost execution-style."

Capers said police had been called to the suspect’s home several times before due to noise complaints from gunshots in his yard. The victims were all from Honduras, according to the FBI. They were all believed to have lived in the home, but were not members of the same family.

Mass shootings have become common in the United States, with at least 176 so far in 2023, the most at this time since at least 2016, according to the Gun Violence Archive. A mass shooting is considered to be an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter.
