This is the biggest title of Ruud's career, after losing three Grand Slam finals and two Masters 1000 finals. He is also the first Norwegian player to win a Masters 1000, just two weeks after falling out of the world's top 10.

Ruud had a stellar week in Madrid, beating three top 10 opponents in one tournament for the second time in his career. Before defeating Draper, who is ranked 6th in the ATP rankings, Ruud overcame No. 4 Taylor Fritz and No. 10 Daniil Medvedev.

The Norwegian player won the first set by winning two consecutive break-points in the last two receiving games.

Draper, who was in good form after winning the Miami title in March, found his rhythm in the second set. The Briton finished with more power and determination to win four games in the second set. Saving three break points in the decisive service game helped Draper win 6-3 and take the match to a deciding set.

In his first final on clay, which is not his forte, Draper struggled to save many difficult points against Ruud, including three break-points in game 3. But in game 5, the No. 5 seed failed when facing two more break-points.

On the other side of the net, Ruud also lost his serve rhythm but still achieved an 80% first-ball scoring rate to save break-points many times. Preserving the remaining service games helped Ruud win this set 6-4 and end the match after 2 hours and 30 minutes of competition.

This is Ruud's 12th clay-court title since 2020, more than any other player. He has also played the most finals on the surface (17) and won the most matches (125) in the past five years. Ruud will move up to world number 7 when the rankings are updated today.

Meanwhile, Draper missed out on becoming the first left-handed player to win the Madrid Open since Rafael Nadal in 2017. But the 23-year-old still had a successful tournament, improving his year-to-date record to 19-5 and moving up to a career-high No. 5 in the ATP rankings. Draper is second in the ATP Finals qualifying standings, behind only Carlos Alcaraz.

Previously, in the women's singles final, world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff 6-3, 7-6 to win the Madrid Open for the third time and reach the 20th title mark.

Sabalenka, along with Petra Kvitova, has won the most Madrid Open titles with three. Odd years seem to bring the Belarusian player luck when she comes to Madrid, where she won in 2021 and 2023.

This is also Sabalenka's third title this year, helping her reach 20 WTA Tour cups since the beginning of her career. After Serena Williams, Sabalenka is the second person to win two 1,000-level events in Miami and Madrid in the same year.

While Sabalenka solidified her position as world number one, Gauff missed out on the chance to become world number two. The American tied her Belarusian opponent 5-5 after 10 matches and will move up to number three when the rankings are updated next week. In second place is still Iga Swiatek, who has not won a tournament since the beginning of the year.
