Dog food is the transliteration of 狗粮 (gǒu liáng) in Chinese, which has 3 current meanings:
a. Cẩu means dog, lương means food, corresponding to the word khuyển lương (犬粮, quǎn liáng): dog food, the British and Americans call it dog food, the French call it nourriture pour chien... This is a type of food specially prepared for dogs, popular in the last 60 years, usually in the form of pellets (grains). Since ancient times, what to feed dogs has been analyzed by the Roman poet Virgil in his work Bucolics (37 BC).
b. Dog food is a Chinese video game term. Moegirlpedia says that "gamers" used the term in reference to collectible card games. Dog food refers to materials that can be obtained in large quantities and have low value, like dog food.
c. Dog food is a term used to describe showing affection to people who do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend. This is a common slang term on the internet. In China, people who do not have a lover are called "single dog" (单身狗: single dog) or "single pond" (单身汪: single pond). These two terms are just humorous ways of calling people on the internet, because "dog" has long been considered a friend of humans, not just an animal.
The slang word "dog food" (狗粮) appeared about 10 years ago, originating from Chinese movies and romance novels and then imported to Vietnam. Young Vietnamese people use the word "dog food" and then turn it into a synonym "dog rice". Besides "dog food", there are also related words as follows:
Scattering dog food (撒狗粮, sā gǒu liáng) and distributing dog food (发狗粮, fā gǒu liáng) mean scattering/distributing dog food, implying that couples show their affectionate behavior towards "single dogs" in public places like scattering/distributing dog food. This behavior can be unintentional, but if intentional, "distributing dog food" means teasing single people, making them jealous and wishing to be like them.
The act of a "single dog" seeing the affection of a couple in front of him is called "kàn gǒu liáng" (看狗粮, kàn gǒu liáng); while feeling (or being forced to see) the love of another person is called "ngất gǒu liáng" (吃狗粮, chī gǒu liáng): "eating dog food" or "mải gǒu liáng" (买狗粮, mǎi gǒu liáng): "buying dog food".
In general, the above slang words are just internet language, used by young people, exchanged with each other via Zalo, TikTok, Facebook and other websites, should stop at the level of teasing, because if it is too much, it will lead to the situation of abusing dogs (虐狗, nüè gǒu), which means mistreating "lonely dogs", people who are also known as single-minded han (单身汉, dānshēn) or single-minded miết (单身鳖, dānshēn biē): single turtles.
