After many visits and practical research at several models inside and outside the province, Ms. Tran Thi Hien, Head of Tay Son village, Thai Hoa commune, realized that purple ginseng is very suitable for local forestry land.
In 2019, Ms. Hien and her family boldly converted nearly 1 hectare of forest land that was growing eucalyptus to grow purple Morinda officinalis. This is a precious herb, a climbing vine with a winding stem, the young stem is purple.
In Oriental medicine, Morinda officinalis is used as a familiar ingredient in medicinal remedies, helping to eliminate rheumatism, nourish the kidneys, strengthen yang, and strengthen tendons and bones. In addition, Morinda officinalis also helps reduce symptoms of joint pain.
Ms. Hien shared: Although it is only a trial planting, the Morinda officinalis plant is very suitable for the forest land of Thai Hoa commune. In particular, it requires little care, and the main food for the plant is microbial fertilizer, organic fertilizer and decomposed straw.
After nearly 4 years of planting, in July 2023, the family's purple ginseng garden was harvested with a revenue of more than 1 billion VND/ha. After deducting expenses, the profit was more than 700 million VND, many times higher than growing eucalyptus and cassava.
Identifying purple Morinda officinalis as a crop that brings high economic efficiency and develops medicinal resources in the area, Ms. Hien's family continued to collect more forest land from some households in the village, expanding the Morinda officinalis growing area to more than 2 hectares.
At the same time, support and guide local people on planting and care techniques, and change crop structure, contributing to increasing income and promoting family and local economic development.
To facilitate the production and processing of finished products from the plant, in 2024, households growing the plant in the commune have joined together to establish the Thai Hoa Commune Cooperative Group for Growing Medicinal Plants with 6 members to support each other in techniques, varieties and capital in production and business. Up to now, the whole commune has nearly 10 households growing the plant on their family's forestry land with a total area of over 7 hectares.
With the guidance and support of the cooperative, in 2023, Ms. Phan Thi Cham's family planted more than 2,000 m2 of purple Morinda officinalis. The planting and care process initially brought positive signals because the tree is suitable for the local soil and climate, grows well, and costs little. In 2025, Ms. Cham's family continued to expand the model to more than 1 hectare.
Ms. Cham shared: Purple ba kích is not difficult to grow, but to achieve a high survival rate and good growth, growers must do well from seed selection, soil preparation to tree care, such as installing an automatic irrigation system, using plastic film to limit weeds. From now until the end of the year, my family will harvest more than 2,000 m2 of ba kích area, the expected economic efficiency is many times higher than growing eucalyptus and acacia.
Thai Hoa has nearly 100 hectares of forestry land. In order to exploit the potential and advantages of the locality, in recent years, the commune has promoted propaganda and encouraged people to convert ineffective crop structures to intensive economic forest planting, applying scientific and technical advances, and bringing high-value forestry plants into production.
At the same time, pay attention to reforesting bare hills and developing the area of regenerated forests, implementing afforestation, planting scattered trees, and planting large timber trees. From 2021 to present, the locality has newly planted and replaced more than 30 hectares of concentrated forests and more than 30 thousand scattered trees.
Implement well the support mechanism to facilitate forest care, management and protection. Actively propagate to people to do well the work of forest fire prevention and protection. Develop the hill forest economy in the direction of farms; maintain and care for fruit trees; develop the model of growing medicinal plants of Morinda officinalis for high economic efficiency.
Vice Chairman of Thai Hoa Commune People's Committee Ha Van Quyet said: Promoting the achieved results, the locality continues to encourage people to expand the purple ba kích production model, processing products from ba kích tubers. Mobilize people to plant, care for, protect forests, develop new types of forestry trees, suitable to local conditions and soil, contributing to promoting economic development in the area.
