The incident happened because many fans bought fake tickets and tried to break the door to enter the stadium. At that time, Cuscatlan Stadium only had two gates open, causing fans to jostle and push each other. "People outside rushed in and fell on us," a fan told La Prensa Grafica.
"Unbelievable! We went to watch the match but saw so many people die" - Alianza fans shared.
According to records, at least 12 people died, of which 9 people died at the stadium, 3 people did not survive after being taken to the hospital.
The stadium was used as a first aid station for the injured.
Previously, the security force asked the management board to open another gate but was not satisfied and had to close it to control the situation.
Some fans claimed that tear gas was fired, which caused the situation to escalate. However, local police said it was just gunpowder smoke and that tear gas was never used.
Despite the chaos outside the stadium, the match inside the stadium continued as normal despite fans' requests to postpone the match.
"Before 7pm, the police closed the gate. They wouldn't let us in. A large number of fans had paid for tickets but they still closed the gate while we were waiting here. At that time, there were many people outside the stadium, including children, old people... We had to rush through the gate to get some air," a fan explained to the media.
The match between the two El Salvador teams was suspended after 20 minutes due to fans entering the stadium and trampling each other. Emergency services immediately used the stadium as a temporary treatment area for the injured.
