DTO - With the desire to improve her family's economy , Ms. Bui Thi Linh (born in 1976), residing in Hamlet 2, Thuong Phuoc 1 Commune, Hong Ngu District, chose dried snakehead fish products to start a business.

Ms. Bui Thi Linh said that her family used to make a living by raising snakehead fish and red tilapia. However, Ms. Linh's fish farming encountered many difficulties such as: high farming costs, at times when fish prices dropped sharply, fish got sick and died, so there was no profit. Faced with that reality, in 2020, Ms. Linh came up with the idea of taking advantage of the fish resources available at home to start a business of drying snakehead fish.

In preparation for the start-up process, Ms. Linh was introduced by the Women's Union of Thuong Phuoc 1 commune to participate in start-up training courses organized by the district and province. Ms. Linh regularly went online to update her knowledge and researched the formula for drying snakehead fish. In mid-2020, Ms. Linh started producing the first batches of dried snakehead fish. Initially, she encountered many difficulties such as: the dried fish could not be preserved for a long time, the seasoning did not suit customers' taste, the consumption market was not large, the amount of dried fish produced was small, only a few dozen kilograms of dried fish per month.

After many failures, she researched and found a drying formula to make a difference for the dried snakehead fish product. She sent all the batches of dried fish to her friends and relatives to try. From the feedback from friends and relatives about the dried products, she learned from the drying process. At the same time, she determined that dried fish is a competitive product, so in the drying process, she always carefully selected the ingredients, and the dried fish must be fresh. In particular, during the processing process, Ms. Linh always took care and was meticulous in every step. After cleaning, the fish was marinated and then dried in the sun for 1-3 days. When checking that the dried fish had enough sun, Ms. Linh packaged and vacuum-sealed it to preserve the product longer.

Supporting Ms. Linh in the process of starting a business, in 2022, the Women's Union of Thuong Phuoc 1 commune introduced her to a loan of 50 million VND. With the capital, Ms. Linh invested in buying a fish scaling machine and a freezer to develop the profession of drying snakehead fish. Thanks to the fish scaling machine, Ms. Linh can process snakehead fish faster than by hand; the freezer helps her more conveniently preserve dried snakehead fish, from which the amount of dried snakehead fish she makes is greater than before.

After many difficulties, up to now, Ms. Linh's dried snakehead fish products are favored by consumers, standing firmly in the market with the brand name Dried Snakehead Fish 5 Binh and recognized by the province as a 3-star OCOP product. Currently, in addition to the snakehead fish source raised by her family, Ms. Linh buys more snakehead fish to dry. According to estimates, her facility produces and supplies the market with about 800kg of dried snakehead fish every month. Ms. Linh also produces dried red tilapia and dried snakehead fish to diversify the product line to serve consumers.

Ms. Bui Thi Linh said: “Since joining the startup, I have had the opportunity to travel to many places and learn many new things. Thanks to starting a business with the profession of drying snakehead fish, I have a stable income, about 7 - 8 million VND/month, improving my family's economy and having a better life. In addition, the drying facility also creates jobs for local female workers.”

Ms. Huynh Thi Huynh Nhu - President of the Women's Union of Thuong Phuoc 1 Commune, Hong Ngu District, said: "Ms. Bui Thi Linh is one of the typical members participating in starting a business in the locality. In the coming time, the Women's Union of the commune will continue to create conditions for Ms. Linh to develop, expand production, develop the economy and create more jobs for many female workers in the locality."
