(CLO) President Donald Trump and adviser Elon Musk's campaign to drastically cut the US government apparatus has laid off more than 9,500 civil servants and public employees as of Friday.
Workers at the departments of Interior , Energy, Veterans Affairs, Agriculture and Health and Human Services have been terminated in a campaign that has so far largely targeted probationary employees in their first year on the job.
Some agencies have been essentially shuttered, such as the independent watchdog Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where cuts also affected workers on fixed-term contracts.

The Internal Revenue Service is preparing to lay off thousands of employees next week, a move that could strain resources ahead of Americans' April 15 income tax filing deadline.
Between 1,200 and 2,000 employees at the Energy Department have been laid off, including 325 from the National Nuclear Security Administration, which oversees the nuclear stockpile, Reuters reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Another 2,300 employees were laid off from the Interior Department, which manages 500 million acres of public lands, including more than 60 national parks, as well as the country's onshore and offshore oil and gas leasing programs, the sources said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is cutting nearly 1,300 employees, or about a tenth of its total staff, the Associated Press reported.
According to Newsweek statistics, in addition to nearly 10,000 civil servants and officials, Mr. Trump's campaign to shrink the state apparatus has also laid off about 200,000 federal workers at at least nine agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Departmentof Education .
Of those, about 75,000 workers have received severance pay that Trump and Musk offered them to leave voluntarily, according to the White House, a figure that represents about 3% of the administration’s 2.3 million civilian employees.
Mr Trump says the federal government is too big and there is too much waste and fraud. The federal government has a debt of about $36 trillion and a deficit of $1.8 trillion last year, and there is bipartisan consensus on the need for reform.
However, a US judge on Monday upheld an injunction against President Donald Trump's plan to liquidate and compensate federal employees.
"I've done a lot for my country and as a veteran who served my country, I feel like I've been betrayed by my country," said Nick Gioia, who was fired despite his long service in the US Army and Department of Defense .
The layoffs are part of a series of cuts targeting departments including Veterans Affairs, Education and the Small Business Administration.
In addition to job cuts, the Trump administration has attempted to freeze most U.S. foreign aid and almost completely shut down several government agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
