These days, deer breeders in Huong Son ( Ha Tinh ) are actively caring for and supplementing nutrients for deer to reap the “blessing” of quality antlers during the Lunar New Year. It is expected that this Tet, deer breeders in Huong Son will earn 218 billion VND.
For a long time, Huong Son district (Ha Tinh) has been considered the “capital” of deer farming for velvet. For the people here, deer have become the main livestock, helping them escape poverty and become rich legitimately.
According to Huong Son people, sika deer usually produce antlers from January to April of the lunar calendar. However, thanks to regular herd screening, the quality of the breeding stock has been improved, so the antler yield is increasingly high, some deer can produce 2-3 litters of antlers per year. Therefore, at this time, some deer have begun to enter the stage of shedding soles and growing antlers, and can be harvested before Tet. Therefore, deer farmers are currently actively supplementing and improving the quality of food to keep the deer herd healthy and their antlers develop well.
Ms. Tran Thi Tuyen (Tuong Son village, Ham Truong commune, Huong Son, Ha Tinh) takes good care of her deer herd to improve the quality of antlers.
As a long-time deer breeder, Ms. Tran Thi Tuyen (Tuong Son village, Ham Truong commune) has a lot of experience in taking care of this animal. According to Ms. Tuyen, the quality of the deer herd has improved, so for many years now, every Tet holiday, the family has had a significant source of income.
Ms. Tuyen said: “This year, my family raised 20 deer, including 10 males. Currently, 4 are in the period of shedding and growing antlers. To have good weight and high quality antlers, during this period, we supplement with starchy foods such as corn, cassava... to keep the deer healthy and develop antlers. In addition, I also supplement the deer with green foods such as elephant grass, corn leaves, jackfruit leaves and regularly clean the barns so that the deer have space to grow well, ensuring their health."
Thanks to her efforts, every Tet holiday, Ms. Tuyen earns an income of about 50-60 million VND from selling deer antlers. This money not only helps her family have a warm and prosperous Tet holiday but also motivates her to continue investing and taking care of the deer herd to welcome new antlers.
This year, when 4 male deer out of a herd of 18 started growing antlers, Ms. Phan Thi Thanh (village 2, Son Giang commune) actively supplemented green food, nutritious foods such as bran, corn flour, sticky rice flour, etc. and increased the deer's food rations more than usual. In particular, the food must be clean and of guaranteed quality, so that the deer will not suffer from intestinal diseases. In addition to ensuring 4 - 6 liters of drinking water for the deer per day, Ms. Thanh also regularly cleans and sanitizes the water troughs every day to avoid bacteria and pathogens.
Ms. Thanh shared: “The 4 deer that give antlers this time are all selected breeding deer, so they have good quality, giving antlers twice a year with a weight of 1.4 - 1.9 kg/pair. Therefore, with the current careful and elaborate care of the deer, I believe that before Tet, the family will have a good source of income.”
On the occasion of Lunar New Year 2025, it is expected that deer farmers in Huong Son will earn over 218 billion VND from selling antlers.
Along with Ms. Tuyen and Ms. Thanh's family, many deer farmers in Huong Son district are currently actively taking care of their animals to welcome a large income from the "luck" of velvet antlers during the Lunar New Year.
Therefore, along with paying attention to supplementing nutrients for deer, breeders also pay attention to keeping their animals warm. During the prolonged cold and rainy weather, farmers have invested in covering barns, maintaining hygiene, and lining them with straw to keep them warm... to ensure the health of deer and avoid affecting the development of antlers.
Currently, the total herd of deer in Huong Son is 47,310, of which about 22,350 produce antlers with an estimated output of more than 19.9 tons. With a selling price of about 11 million VND/kg, it is expected that during this Tet holiday, the whole district will earn over 218 billion VND from selling antlers.
Deer velvet is also known as ban long chau, quan loc nhung, hoang mao nhung, huyet nhung. This is the young horn of deer, male deer from 3 years old and up.
In traditional medicine, deer antler is a sweet, warm medicine that enters the liver, kidney, heart, and pericardium meridians. Deer antler has the effect of filling the essence and blood, moistening the lungs, and strengthening the yang. Deer antler medicine is very good for people with weak constitutions, stiff tendons, people with tuberculosis, and women with menorrhagia and metrorrhagia. In addition, deer antler also nourishes the kidneys, strengthens yang, and is good for men.
