After first aid to stop the bleeding, the doctors examined and performed an endoscopy to discover many maggots nesting inside the left nostril, and the right nostril was in a state of atrophied mucosa with scabs all over.

Doctors at Lao Cai General Hospital performed an endoscopy to remove more than 100 live maggots nesting in the patient’s nose and cleaned the patient’s nasal cavity. After successfully removing the maggot nest, the patient’s health has stabilized and he is being monitored and treated.

According to the patient's family, about a year ago, they discovered that the patient had a lot of runny nose with a foul, unpleasant smell.

The family encouraged the patient to go to the hospital for examination and treatment, but he deliberately did not go to the hospital for examination and treatment, allowing the disease to become severe, causing the patient's nasal cavity to become infected, red, and smelly.

Most likely the initial cause was due to the patient having sinusitis, then developing nasal hemorrhoids with crusts. The nasal tissues were severely eroded and ulcerated. The patient also had difficulty breathing and swelling around the nose and face.

According to the assessment of Doctor Do Dinh Quy Nhon, Deputy Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital, this is a rare case due to lack of attention to hygiene, which inadvertently creates favorable conditions for larvae to develop into maggots.

Maggots grow very quickly. In cases where maggots are present in the nose, they often cause irritation, increased nasal discharge, swelling, a feeling of foreign objects in the nose, nasal pain, nosebleeds or foul-smelling nasal discharge, and may also cause fever.

If not treated promptly, the larvae can penetrate deeper into the brain parenchyma causing meningitis leading to death.

Therefore, people need to pay attention when they see unusual signs in their body and should immediately go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment, thereby preventing the disease from progressing adversely to their health.
