National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue meets with Governor General of Australia David Hurley

On the afternoon of April 4, at the National Assembly House, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue met with Governor-General of Australia David Hurley, who is on a state visit to Vietnam.

Warmly welcoming the Governor-General of Australia on a State visit to Vietnam, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue emphasized that the visit is of special significance in the context of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations; he believes that the visit will contribute to promoting and bringing the relationship between the two countries to a new height. The development of strong relations and trust between the two countries is an unchangeable factor to cope with the current volatile world situation.

The National Assembly Chairman affirmed that increasing political trust is an important foundation for promoting comprehensive development of bilateral relations in areas such as politics, diplomacy, defense, security, investment, culture, tourism, people-to-people diplomacy as well as promoting cooperation in Party foreign affairs, State diplomacy and people-to-people exchange.

Through the Governor-General of Australia, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue respectfully invited Senate President Sue Lines and House of Representatives Speaker Milton Dick to visit Vietnam at a suitable time.

The National Assembly Chairman hopes that the Governor-General of Australia will continue to pay attention to and promote defense and security cooperation between the two countries; continue to support Vietnam in the process of participating in the United Nations peacekeeping force. According to the National Assembly Chairman, the two countries are members of many economic, trade and investment cooperation frameworks, and new-generation free trade agreements such as the CPTPP. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic causing disruptions in the global supply chain, Vietnam hopes that the two sides will promote sustainable and balanced trade, and Australia will facilitate the import of more agricultural products from Vietnam and vice versa. The Governor-General is interested in and promotes cooperation in the field of labor, especially expanding cooperation in agricultural techniques and vacation labor; promoting cooperation between localities of the two countries.

Governor-General of Australia David Hurley expressed his pleasure to meet again and thanked the warm welcome of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue; expressed his pleasure to visit Vietnam this time to celebrate the bilateral relationship which is developing very strongly and has a very solid foundation to continue to develop and seize opportunities in the future. The Governor-General highly appreciated the active contributions of the National Assembly Chairman in promoting educational cooperation between the two countries; emphasized that cooperation between the two countries has been and is creating many opportunities for both sides and the potential is still very large. Looking back at the 50-year history of developing relations, with the efforts of generations of leaders and people of the two countries, the Vietnam - Australia relationship has been nurtured and developed well.

Emphasizing that people-to-people exchange is an extremely important foundation, Mr. David Hurley shared his feelings about the potential for cooperation from businesses, trade, investment, etc.; assessed that the two sides have built a very solid foundation for the development of bilateral relations, especially through the Vietnam-Australia Economic Cooperation Enhancement Strategy.

Mr. David Hurley expressed his delight at the strong development of cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries; highly appreciated the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the Australian Senate and House of Representatives signed during the visit of the National Assembly Chairman in 2022. The Australian Senate Committee on Regional Cooperation will soon visit Vietnam. Both sides have Friendship Parliamentary Groups. The Governor-General believes that the two sides will work together to find ways to promote relations and provide directions to continue promoting cooperation.

Governor-General David Hurley stated that Australia supports ASEAN's stance on the East Sea issue and ASEAN's central role as well as ASEAN's direction for resolving regional issues; agreed that all parties need to make efforts to maintain peace, stability, security, safety, freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea; respect national sovereignty, international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea; seriously implement the DOC and build an effective and efficient COC in accordance with international law.

The Governor-General agreed with the National Assembly Chairman's sharing on a number of new areas of cooperation between the two countries' legislative bodies, in perfecting legal institutions to enhance cooperation on regional and global issues such as: Institutions to promote the digital transformation ecosystem, equitable energy transition and climate change response. The Governor-General believes that these are important areas, bringing benefits to both sides, therefore, need to be paid attention to as well as learn from past experiences and use them as a solid foundation to strengthen cooperative relations.

Wishing the Governor-General and his wife a successful visit to Vietnam, appreciating Australia's interest in the cooperation mechanism in the Mekong Sub-region, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue thanked Australia for supporting Vietnam's candidacy for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, and sharing many similar views at regional and international forums./.
