Vietnamese durian faces export crisis

Dubbed the “king of exported fruits” of Vietnam, durian is currently going through an unprecedented crisis. Many shipments have been returned by China due to exceeding the permitted cadmium threshold, causing export activities to almost “freeze”, causing heavy losses for businesses and farmers.

Many containers of durian that did not meet standards for cadmium residue were returned, leading to a serious decline in export output. According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the first four months of 2025, durian export turnover reached only 183 million USD, down 60.9% over the same period. The Chinese market, which accounts for the majority of output, decreased by 75% to only 105 million USD. Enterprises are in a difficult situation: each container worth billions of VND is held at the border gate for 7-10 days, incurring high storage costs, and even facing the risk of being returned. Many companies are forced to suspend exports or operate in a precarious state.

Durian farmers have also been hit hard. Although farmgate prices have not fallen sharply due to seasonal factors, panic is spreading due to concerns about unstable output. If this situation persists, durian cultivation is at risk of stagnating, threatening future supply capacity.
