Non-drug treatments refer to methods of treating or supporting the treatment of diseases without using any chemical drugs that affect the body through injection, oral administration, topical application, or inhalation via the nose and throat. Currently, there are many non-drug treatment methods such as physiotherapy, traditional medicine, psychotherapy, health preservation, Qigong, yoga, etc. Each method has a different impact on the body and can be used individually or in combination to enhance treatment effectiveness, especially for chronic diseases.

Mr. Ho Tat Thang, from Gio An commune, Gio Linh district, has been living with a herniated disc for many years. Previously, due to his busy work schedule, he didn't focus on treatment and only used Western medicine to alleviate the pain. As he got older, his condition worsened. He said he had consulted many doctors and tried many different medications, but the results were not as expected.

After researching and experiencing it firsthand, he chose to treat his herniated disc using natural therapies for over two years. Besides undergoing physical therapy at a traditional medicine clinic in sessions, he learned exercises and movements to do at home to reduce pressure on his joints. Mr. Thang said: “Since starting natural therapy, my herniated disc has improved significantly. My health has also improved, and I feel more relaxed and at ease.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, residing in Dong Luong ward, Dong Ha city, suffers from chronic headaches. However, after many years of taking Western medicine without improvement, and with the condition tending to worsen, she sought out non-drug headache treatments.

Ms. Hien said: "Before, every time I had a pain attack, I would take Western medicine, even if the pain was just a fleeting sensation. Although this method quickly relieved the pain, when it returned, the intensity of the pain increased. Not only that, because I used so much Western medicine, my liver and kidney functions were also affected."

Recommended by friends, she began researching natural remedies for headaches. She was advised to use methods such as hot compresses, steam inhalation, massage, and acupressure to relieve the pain. Initially, she received assistance from medical staff at a healthcare facility. Later, after mastering the techniques, she proactively performed these treatments at home. In addition, she enrolled in a therapeutic yoga class every morning, which significantly improved her health. She stated that since the beginning of the year, despite frequent weather changes, she no longer suffers from the persistent headaches she experienced before.

Ms. Phuong Thao is a therapeutic yoga instructor in Dong Ha City. Her classes are always packed with students of all ages. According to Ms. Thao, as society develops and the quality of life improves, people pay more attention to and invest more in their health.

Ms. Thao designs lesson plans tailored to each student because everyone's health problems are different. Among the topics students are most interested in are exercises to treat neck and shoulder pain, back pain, spinal problems, varicose veins, endocrine disorders, high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, and herniated discs. "Nowadays, it's not just people with illnesses who seek natural therapies; even healthy people regularly exercise to improve their health," Ms. Thao said.

Non-drug treatment methods have existed for a long time, but they were not given much attention in the past, especially after the advent and rapid development of Western medicine in the 20th century. However, as Western medicine treatments revealed their undesirable side effects, many people tended to return to researching and applying non-drug treatments, especially for chronic diseases. Currently, in medical facilities, non-drug treatments are still used in conjunction with drug treatments.

According to traditional medicine practitioner Nguyen Thi Thu Tram of Tien Phuong Traditional Medicine Clinic in Dong Ha City, treating illnesses with natural therapies is increasingly chosen by many people due to its numerous advantages. Not only is it safe and effective, but drug-free treatment is also easy to implement and low-cost.

Besides treating illnesses, this therapy is also very effective in preventing diseases, as patients can proactively apply it. The fact that many people choose drug-free treatment methods shows that people are increasingly interested in gentle and safe treatments, and are proactively improving their health through natural therapies to prevent diseases.

Therefore, the burden of disease will be reduced. However, natural therapies also have some limitations, such as often slow effects, long treatment times requiring patience from patients, and unsuitability for acute cases.
