Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen (left cover), in Hamlet 4, has a stable life thanks to her carpet sewing job.
Based on her sewing experience and the desire to help women have jobs at home, in 2022, Ms. Dang Thi Ngoc Anh boldly started a business sewing floor mats, rice cooker bases... and established a sewing group, with her as the group leader.
Initially, only a few women joined the sewing group. Through effective operation, the group now has a stable workshop, creating regular jobs for 20 women, of whom 10 work at the workshop and 10 receive goods to take home. Up to now, the model has provided vocational training, transferred techniques and supported income for more than 120 women in Vi Tan ward and neighboring areas, such as Vi Thanh ward, Hoa Luu commune...
Ms. Ngoc Anh shared: “Starting a business at the age of nearly 50 is quite difficult. However, carpet sewing does not require high skills, is easy to learn, has low costs, and is suitable for women, especially housewives or those in difficult circumstances, so I have maintained the model until now. Those who have a sewing machine can take the goods home, those who do not have one, I am willing to lend them a machine and teach the profession for free.” From the model, members have an income of 3-5 million VND/month. Some women who previously had no income have now risen to stabilize their lives.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen in Hamlet 4, a member of the sewing group, said: “Previously, I worked as a hired worker with an unstable income. Since joining the sewing group and receiving vocational training support, I have had a stable job with a monthly income of more than 3 million VND. Since then, my family's economy has gradually become more stable.” Ms. Pham Thi Duyen, a member who escaped poverty at the end of 2024, emotionally said: “Last year, thanks to the carpet sewing job, I had a stable income, with an income of about 5 million VND/month.”
Not only creating jobs, Ms. Ngoc Anh also actively supports women in starting businesses, organizing revolving capital groups, and providing guidance on accessing preferential loans. In particular, she has used the social network Facebook to promote products, helping sewing groups expand their product consumption markets. In 2024, Ms. Ngoc Anh's "Women's Carpet Sewing Group" model helped two women escape poverty sustainably through vocational training, job connections, and start-up capital support.
Along with the model of "Women's carpet sewing group", the model of "Sewing group" led by Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Kieu in Hamlet 6, is increasingly effective.
In 2021, with the support of the Women's Union, Ms. Kieu established a sewing group with 15 members. She invested in machinery to produce a variety of products. She was introduced to access capital from the Project to support female garment workers affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and received a non-refundable 35 million VND, along with 5 million VND from the Women's Union of Hau Giang province (old), giving her more motivation to start a business. Ms. Kieu confided: "In addition to receiving orders for sewing clothes from the company, I proactively connected with small traders selling ready-made clothes at markets in and outside the city to increase income for women."
Ms. Phan Thi Ngoc Trinh, Vice President of the Women's Union of Vi Tan Ward, said: "We focus on livelihood models suitable for women. Sewing groups not only generate income but also provide vocational training, support women to confidently start a business, take control of their lives with their own hands and creativity." From the practical effectiveness of sewing groups, the women's start-up movement in Vi Tan is spreading strongly. Each model not only helps to sustainably reduce poverty but also affirms the role of women in economic development and building happy families.
