| The area of pink bananas of the Green Agriculture and Forestry Cooperative (Tan Tien hamlet, Quan Chu commune) is preparing for harvest. |
Mr. Dang Le Ninh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quan Chu Commune, said: the total area of fruit trees in the commune is about 300 hectares, of which nearly 100 hectares are bananas. The pink banana variety grows well, has high productivity and is purchased by traders right at the garden, making people excited.
To make Quan Chu green with banana trees, the people have gone through many ups and downs. Before, they planted lychee, apricot, plum and then switched to longan. There was a time when the sound of trucks was bustling throughout the area, each household earned hundreds of millions of dong, houses were spacious, and beautiful cars were everywhere. But for several years in a row, the longan crop failed, causing many households to suffer and accumulate debt.
In 2010, the pink banana tree was brought in for testing and quickly proved its superiority due to its ease of care, quick rotation, high yield and stable consumption all year round. After only a few crops, bananas have become the mainstay in the transformation of the commune's agricultural structure.
The family of Ms. Ban Thi Hong, Tan Tien hamlet, is one of the typical households. She said: 5 years ago, I invested more than 2 hectares of land to grow pink bananas. Thanks to meticulous care and mastery of techniques, the banana garden always achieves high productivity. In 2024, although Typhoon Yagi damaged many areas in the region, my garden only lost about 300 bunches. With banana prices increasing 2-3 times, the total revenue from bananas and nearly 300 intercropped grapefruit trees reached nearly 1 billion VND, earning about 800 million VND in profit.
To proactively source seeds, Ms. Hong researched banana propagation using tissue culture method. If you want to have bananas to sell in time for Tet, you have to plant them from the second lunar month, when the plants grow well, there is little wind and storms and the bunches ripen in the peak consumption season, the price will double.
Along with Ms. Hong’s family, many households in the commune have become rich thanks to the pink banana tree. Favored by nature, fertile land and the industrious and creative spirit of the people, the pink banana is asserting its position in the crop structure of Quan Chu. The bananas here have a beautiful appearance, a sweeter and more fragrant flavor than many other regions.
The banana growing model also helps to effectively utilize hilly land and streamside land, which were previously ineffective for growing crops, contributing to enriching the land known as the "sweet fruit land" at the foot of Tam Dao. Thanks to the obvious effectiveness, many families have expanded their acreage, combining intercropping with other fruit trees such as grapefruit and longan to increase income and diversify products, creating a sustainable value chain.
Currently, pink bananas are grown in the hamlets of Tan Tien, Tan Lap, Chiem 1, Chiem 2, Doc Vu... forming a large specialized area. Each hectare yields 30-35 tons of fruit/year, with an average selling price of 8,000-12,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, growers earn a profit of 250-300 million VND/ha. If the weather is favorable and the price is high, the profit can double.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Huynh, Director of the Green Agriculture and Forestry Cooperative, Tan Tien hamlet, emphasized: Sustainable agriculture requires choosing the right plants, mastering the techniques and understanding the market. Pink bananas demonstrate the right direction and are a symbol of will, determination and aspiration to become rich on the homeland.
From the outstanding economic efficiency, in the coming time, the Green Agriculture and Forestry Cooperative will guide people to apply new techniques, VietGAP processes and gradually build the Quan Chu pink banana brand, at the same time connect distribution channels so that bananas can reach further, affirming their position in the market inside and outside the province.
