Signals from new production models

After the administrative unit arrangement according to Resolution No. 1671/NQ-UBTVQH15 in 2025, Dam Rong 4 commune was formed on the basis of merging the entire area and population of three communes Da Tong, Da Long and Dung K'No. With a natural area of more than 391km2 and 16 villages, this place has become a large community with 17,184 people; of which, more than 90% are ethnic minorities.

We visited the durian intercropping coffee model of Mr. Ka Son Ha Dong's family in village 1, Dam Rong 4 commune - a special bright spot in the economic development of local ethnic minorities.

The durian intercropping model of Mr. Ka Son Ha Dong's family in village 1, Dam Rong 4 commune brings high economic efficiency.

Nearly 9 years ago, when many households were still hesitant about high-value tree varieties, Mr. Ha Dong boldly planted 50 Ri6 durian trees for testing. The first stage was inevitably difficult, because his family did not have a firm grasp of the technique, and the annual harvest was not much. But with perseverance and hard work, his durian garden has grown more and more.

Up to now, on an area of 4 hectares, he has more than 600 durian trees of various types. The last harvest season has brought great joy to his family. More than 100 Ri6 durian trees yielded about 7 tons, purchased by traders at 50,000 VND/kg, bringing in a revenue of 350 million VND.

Not stopping there, more than 100 durian trees of the Thai variety later bloomed, yielding an additional 10 tons of fruit, bringing his family an additional 400 million VND. Not only creating high income, Mr. Dong's model is also a lesson in the perseverance and daring to think and act of ethnic minorities in developing the local economy.

In the recent durian crop, Mr. Ka Son Ha Dong's family earned hundreds of millions of dong from durian trees.

In addition to durian, the model of growing mulberry and raising silkworms is also gradually spreading in many villages in the commune. This is a crop suitable for local natural conditions, requiring low initial investment capital but bringing stable income. More and more households are boldly converting ineffective land areas to grow mulberry, helping people's economic life to have positive changes.

Besides the efforts of the people, the government of Dam Rong 4 commune plays a very important role in supporting livelihoods, providing technical guidance and organizing the implementation of resources from the National Target Program on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dam Rong 4 Commune, Nguyen Van Quang, said that for many years, ethnic affairs have always been closely directed by the Standing Party Committee, People's Council and People's Committee of the Commune. The specialized departments and offices assigned to implement the program have all made efforts to put the policy into practice, ensuring resources reach the right subjects and promote effectiveness.

It is expected that by the end of 2025, Dam Rong 4 commune will disburse 100% of the allocated capital, ensuring that support programs reach the right people and for the right purposes.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, currently the whole Dam Rong commune still has 276 multidimensional poor households; of which, 180 poor households are ethnic minorities. The local poverty reduction path still has many difficulties, but positive signals from effective production models show that the commune's direction is correct.

NTM contributes to improving the quality of material and spiritual life for people in ethnic minority areas.

Dam Rong 4 Commune has mechanisms and encourages ethnic minority people to convert crop structure.

The commune government continues to encourage the conversion of crop structure, developing key products suitable to the climate and soil such as durian, coffee, and mulberry. At the same time, it focuses on vocational training, capital support, and creating long-term livelihoods. At the same time, efforts to develop infrastructure, provide health care, and improve people's capacity will help the community develop sustainably.

In the mountains and forests of Dam Rong 4 commune, the durian gardens laden with fruit and the lush green mulberry fields are proof of the strong transformation of the ethnic minorities here. They are gradually escaping poverty by their own strength, with the persistent support of the local government.

The journey is still long, but certainly each new crop season will continue to bring more hope to the difficult area of Dam Rong 4.
