Soft Skills - Gen Z's Survival Gear in the AI Era
Every field and profession has changed a lot compared to before, leading to changes in the labor market in terms of industry structure, skill requirements and working methods. "Stable career for life" is no longer popular, "one job for nine is better than nine jobs" is also understood differently. To be able to easily adapt to these changes, Gen Z needs to equip themselves with many skills. Not only professional knowledge, today's employers especially appreciate soft skills of employees and it is soft skills that are "survival luggage" in the digital age. Workers in general and Gen Z in particular must be ready with the mindset of "as long as you work, you have to learn", lifelong learning.
However, experts also believe that Gen Z does not need to become "superhumans", but needs to become "flexible, resilient and continuous learning versions".

Sharing at the discussion "What Gen Z needs to prepare for in the AI era" organized by VnExpress and RMIT University Vietnam, Ms. Nguyen Phuong Mai - CEO, Groove Technology Vietnam, stated that what Gen Z needs to focus on is professional knowledge and training themselves in necessary soft skills. "We have gone through many technological revolutions. No matter how much technology develops, it is just a tool to support work," Ms. Nguyen Phuong Mai emphasized.
Previously, a survey on the same topic conducted by VnExpress with the participation of nearly 7,000 parents and Gen Z also showed great interest in important skills for future careers. Nearly 50% of parents believe that their children will have to adapt and learn new skills.
5 skill groups will be the 'trump card' of humans against AI
At the above discussion, experts suggested 5 groups of skills that Gen Z needs to equip themselves with to always be ready for all changes, make the most of opportunities from technology and create real value.
The group of digital and technology skills including the ability to work remotely, AI skills, technology, data skills... are important skills for Gen Z to optimize performance. An important note is that Gen Z needs to use AI properly if they do not want AI to eliminate their own critical thinking and creative skills.
Digital skills and technology help Gen Z optimize work performance
According to Ms. Nguyen Phuong Dung - a former student of RMIT Vietnam, former Head of Business Department of SME, Vietnam & Indonesia (Google Ads), Gen Z must always update their skills and knowledge about technology. "Stopping is not standing still but falling behind", Ms. Phuong Dung emphasized.
“No machine has passion,” added Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Ngoc Minh, Deputy Head of Research & Innovation, Faculty of Science , Engineering & Technology, RMIT Vietnam. In addition to technological skills, Gen Z also needs to nurture “human” values, understand what AI does well and maximize what humans do well that technology cannot reach.
Communication and collaboration skills are also a group of skills that Gen Z needs to possess regardless of the field they work in. This group includes effective communication skills, teamwork, cross-cultural communication, presentation, negotiation, networking, customer service thinking... These skills help Gen Z understand customer needs, thereby creating sustainable value.

The third group of skills is the group of thinking and problem-solving skills. This group includes many skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, creative thinking, innovation, data analysis thinking... These are the key skills to be ready to face challenges, take advantage of opportunities to find creative and effective solutions.
The group of self-management and personal development skills includes skills such as time management, lifelong self-learning, perseverance, adapting to change, emotional management and life balance. These are also vital skills when Gen Z is and will face many pressures in life in the technology era.
Finally, the group of leadership and management skills - the key factor that helps Gen Z affirm their position and develop their career. This group includes leadership skills, personal project management, personal branding... and Gen Z needs to equip themselves to create a unique mark and increase their self-worth in the eyes of employers and succeed in life.
Sharing the same opinion about the important skills for Gen Z in the AI era, experts also affirmed the importance of universityeducation in the new era. Ms. Nguyen Phuong Mai highly appreciated the practicality of RMIT Vietnam thanks to the gathering of many businesses to participate in the Industry Advisory Board to help the training program be closer to reality and bring the best internship and job opportunities for students. Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Ngoc Minh concluded that after 25 years of presence and development in Vietnam, RMIT helps students prepare for the future by combining factors: training in multidisciplinary skills and flexible adaptation, technology skills along with the "university - business - student" ecosystem.
