Gaming industry in Vietnam is booming

At the Gaming On TikTok Hanoi Summit 2025 event recently held in Hanoi , Ms. Maayan Kolter - Global Development Director of Gaming at TikTok affirmed that the online gaming industry in Vietnam in the period of 2025-2030 will grow explosively.

Ms. Maayan Kolter cited the Report on Management and Development Strategy of the Online Electronic Game Industry in Vietnam for the period 2025-2030, stating that Vietnam in particular and Southeast Asia in general is the region with the highest growth rate of mobile games in the world , at 7.4% per year in the period 2022-2025.

Vietnam's gaming industry revenue is expected to reach 1.66 billion USD by 2025, and continue to grow steadily at 9.77% per year, reaching 2.42 billion USD by 2029.

In particular, according to Statista's 2024 report, mobile games, the most popular form of gaming among Vietnamese people, will reach 712 million USD in revenue in 2029.

Vietnam is also ranked by Bloomberg in the top 5 countries producing mobile games in the world in 2023, with 4.2 billion global downloads, 2.5 times the world average growth. This is a clear demonstration of the creativity, production capacity and international competitiveness potential of the Vietnamese gaming industry.

According to TikTok Marketing Science's Global Gaming LiveOps Survey (conducted via the AYTM platform) in April 2024, up to 59% of TikTok users discovered new games through creative content on the platform.

Additionally, 64% of users said they interacted with gaming content that included music and other entertainment elements. This shows that TikTok is not only a platform for promoting games, but also a place for players to find new stories, new experiences, and connect with the gaming community.

"Vietnam is currently emerging as one of the leading creative hubs of the gaming industry in Southeast Asia. With the strong development of the passionate game building community, along with the support from the government, Vietnamese game publishers not only create successful games domestically but also reach international levels," said Ms. Maayan Kolter - Global Development Director of Gaming at TikTok.

Game programmers have huge incomes

In Vietnam, there are currently more than 2,000 game studios with about 430,000 employees. The game market is attracting thousands of high-quality employees. According to a survey by TopDev, the average salary of game programmers recruited in Vietnam in 2023 is 20 million VND/month. This salary may vary depending on the position, experience and skills of the programmer.

According to Dr. Cao Minh Thang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology, the starting salary for game design and development positions ranges from 10 - 20 million VND/month, depending on individual capacity.

For employees with 2-3 years of work experience, this salary will have a clear differentiation, some even receive a salary of up to 50 million VND/month. In the current high-salary recruitment category in Vietnam, game programmers are at the top.

Games produced in Vietnam but released in the global market are estimated to reach about 200 million USD/year (source compiled from Sensor Tower and Vietnam Game Studio Club in 2023).

The above figures show that over the years, Vietnam has seized the opportunity in the development trend of the world's online game industry. Online game production and publishing companies have taken advantage of abundant, high-quality human resources to focus on developing games of genres such as: Mmorpg (multiplayer online role-playing game), Turn base (turn-based tactical battle formation game), Moba (multiplayer online arena game), Casual (popular, simple game), SLG (tactical simulation game), RPG (role-playing game),...

With the advantage of a young population, easily adapting and accepting new waves of technology, it is a "commercial avenue" for the world's leading online game publishing companies from Japan, Korea, China and North America.

Besides being a potential market for revenue exploitation in the online game industry, Vietnam has become a reliable “outsourcing” address for major online game publishing companies in the world for many years. There are many famous game titles produced by 100% Vietnamese staff such as: Free Fire, Caravan War, Metal Squad, Arena of Survivors,…

Besides, online games are currently classified as one of the digital content industries with high intellectual content, bringing in great profits, creating jobs for IT human resources, attracting labor, and contributing significantly to the state budget.
