The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion said that from June 12 to August 4, the Institute organized a class to transfer autologous stem cell transplantation techniques for multiple myeloma to a number of hospitals.

This is an activity in Project 1816 of the Ministry of Health to support lower-level hospitals to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment.

The course was attended by medical staff from Nghe An General Hospital, Phu Tho General Hospital and Thai Nguyen Central Hospital. During the 8 weeks, doctors and nurses were taught theory and guided through the autologous stem cell transplant procedure directly at the Stem Cell Transplant Department and Stem Cell Bank of the Institute.

According to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the optimal treatment method that helps many people with malignant and benign blood diseases have the opportunity to recover and return to normal life. However, this is a complex technique that must be performed according to strict procedures, ensuring strict professional requirements.

Autologous stem cell transplantation is a form of transplantation in which the patient's stem cells are collected and stored, then infused back into the patient to restore blood-forming tissue.

To implement autologous stem cell transplantation, careful preparation in many aspects is required and it must be carried out by experienced experts. Participating in training and receiving technical transfer is the first step to prepare human resources for the lower level.

With the support and technical transfer from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Nghe An General Hospital and Da Nang Hospital have successfully performed the first autologous stem cell transplants. Before implementation, the Institute's experts conducted surveys and provided advice on preparing facilities, equipment, drugs, chemicals, etc. for the transplant process.

When performing the first transplant, experienced staff from the Institute directly guided and performed stem cell separation and stem cell infusion, while closely monitoring the patient's progress to order tests and adjust medications, and promptly handle complications.

The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion is the leading prestigious facility in the country in stem cells in receiving and storing umbilical cord blood stem cells, pre-transplant testing, monitoring stem cell transplant results, and performing hematopoietic stem cell transplants to treat hematological diseases.

The first autologous stem cell transplant at the Institute was carried out in 2006. By June 2023, the Institute had performed over 570 hematopoietic stem cell transplants with many complex techniques, from many different stem cell sources such as umbilical cord blood stem cell transplants (same bloodline and different bloodline), half-matched transplants (haplotype transplants), half-matched transplants combined with umbilical cord blood stem cells... Stem cell transplant techniques are applied to treat more diseases and the age of transplants is increasingly expanding.

With the responsibility of a leading specialized unit, the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion is always ready to support and transfer advanced techniques suitable to the conditions of lower-level hospitals, including autologous stem cell transplantation techniques.

This activity contributes to improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment in many areas across the country, helping patients access better and better health care services locally./.
