Crystal Palace suffer shock. |
According to the Daily Mail , Crystal Palace are embroiled in a tense legal battle to avoid being stripped of their Europa League ticket for the 2025/26 season for violating UEFA's multi-club ownership regulations.
The crucial meeting is taking place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, where Palace will present what they believe are strong arguments to defend the historic Europa League spot secured by their FA Cup final win over Manchester City.
The crux of the matter is that American businessman John Textor owns around 43% of Crystal Palace, while also being a major shareholder in Lyon, a French team that also qualifies for the Europa League. Under strict UEFA regulations, two teams with the same owner are not allowed to participate in the same European tournament, in order to ensure fairness and transparency in competition.
To complicate matters further, Palace could be relegated to the Europa Conference League, but even that place is under threat from Brondby, the Danish club controlled by co-owner David Blitzer.
Meanwhile, if Palace are eliminated outright, Brighton could be the side to benefit, securing a replacement spot to play in Europe.
Palace claim Textor has no real control over the club, with his 25% voting rights on par with partners Steve Parish, Josh Harris and Blitzer. They also claim there is no sharing of assets, players or infrastructure between Palace and Lyon.
One of the exit routes mentioned is that Textor could transfer the shares to a trust or sell them, but both options are difficult to implement in the short term.
If Crystal Palace lose this legal battle, it could lose tens of millions of pounds in European revenue, slow down recruitment and threaten the stability of the team under manager Oliver Glasner.
