Girl accidentally swallowed the whole pill with sharp edges

On January 17, Le Van Viet Hospital (HCMC) announced that its doctors had just performed an endoscopy to remove an unopened pill stuck in the esophagus of a 27-year-old female patient.

Previously, on January 14, patient NTNH (born in 1998, residing in Lap Vo district, Dong Thap province) visited Le Van Viet Hospital. The patient said that after taking the medicine, she felt difficulty swallowing, discomfort, and heartburn. Worried about her health, Ms. H. visited the hospital. Doctors suspected a foreign object in the esophagus and ordered an endoscopy.

Endoscopy results showed that the upper 1/3 mucosa detected a 4-edged zinc-coated drug foreign body measuring 1.7cm x 1.7cm deeply embedded in the wall at the edges. After removing the foreign body, the patient's pain was significantly reduced and he felt more comfortable, no longer feeling stuck in his throat.

Doctor Nguyen Van Nha, Le Van Viet Hospital said that handling foreign objects with sharp edges requires the use of specialized equipment to avoid causing further damage to the esophagus.

Doctors recommend that both adults and children should always be careful when taking medicine and eating food. You should check and read the directions carefully, and when taking medicine, you should not laugh or shout to avoid swallowing unopened pills.

In case of suspected foreign objects in the esophagus, go to a medical facility immediately for examination and timely treatment. Absolutely do not use your hands or any object to hook or poke into the throat, which can cause dangerous swelling of the hypopharynx.

If not treated promptly, these foreign objects can cause inflammation, abscesses, bleeding, even esophageal perforation, and deep infections that can threaten the patient's life.
