Vietnamese chess competes in Southeast Asian youth tournament

VHO - The Vietnamese youth chess team is competing at the 2025 Southeast Asian Youth Group Championship, taking place in Penang City (Malaysia) until July 10.

This year's tournament brings together more than 300 players from 18 countries and territories, including: Australia, China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, India, Japan, Laos, Macau (China), Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, USA and Vietnam.

Vietnam is the delegation with the largest number of players participating in the tournament.

The tournament features 57 players with international titles, including 2 Grandmasters (GM) and 9 International Masters (IM), promising top-notch competition.

The competition tables are divided into 16 age groups for men and women: U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, U20, along with groups over 50 years old (S50) and over 65 years old (S65), creating conditions for all ages to demonstrate their talents.

At the tournament, Vietnam is the delegation with the largest number of participating players with 143 players.

The expected faces of the Vietnamese youth team are: Duong Vu Anh, Nguyen Quoc Hy, Dinh Nho Kiet, Nguyen Nam Kiet, Dang Anh Minh, Nguyen Vu Bao Chau, Le Thai Hoang Anh, Nguyen Thien Ngan,...

Young Vietnamese chess players excel in standard chess

Notable among them are two players Duong Vu Anh and Nguyen Nam Kiet who just won medals at the 2025 FIDE World Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship, held in Rhodes (Greece) in April.

The tournament is an opportunity for young Vietnamese players to compete and gain experience to develop their expertise in the future.

At the end of the first competition, standard chess, young Vietnamese players excellently won 28 gold medals.

The Vietnamese youth chess team will continue to compete in rapid and blitz chess in age groups on July 9 and July 10 (local time).
