Since 2022, the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security has officially deployed its forces to participate in peacekeeping operations. To date, five working groups have been assigned to the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations in the United States, the UNMISS Mission (South Sudan) and UNISFA (Abyei region). In order to ensure the quality of the force, the Ministry of Public Security pays special attention to training officers according to UN standards. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Quyen Chinh, Task Force No. 6, said that officers are trained in direct and online courses, updated on the situation of the mission, and practical experience from the military and police forces that have participated. Training content includes UN regulations, field access skills, communication with local residents, participation in civil activities, standard procedures in management and operations at the mission, etc.

Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Ngoc Loc, Deputy Commander of the Peacekeeping Police Unit No. 1, said that in order to meet the requirements of the mission, the Ministry of Public Security determined that it was necessary to build a team of officers with strong political will, professional proficiency, good foreign language skills, understanding of international law, high professional qualifications and the ability to work and operate independently in an international environment. The Peacekeeping Police Unit No. 1 has invited international experts from experienced countries such as Indonesia and Italy to participate in training.

Major Andi Rio Indra Saputra, Head of Training Department of the Indonesian Peacekeeping Police Center, highly appreciated the learning spirit of the Vietnamese officers. He shared: “We have designed a suitable training program, focusing on unit preparation and management - which is especially important for a newly established force like Vietnam. There are many in-depth interactions with Vietnamese commanders and instructors so that they can continue to convey to other members of the unit.”

Along with sending officers to missions, the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security is aiming to nominate candidates for important positions at the UN headquarters as well as leadership and command positions in peacekeeping missions. The Ministry of Public Security also aims to build a training and capacity building center for peacekeeping that meets UN and international standards, aiming to become a leading center in the Asia-Pacific region.

Support the community, spread love

Not only focusing on improving professional capacity, the Vietnam People's Public Security officers when participating in the UN peacekeeping mission also actively participate in civil mobilization activities, community support, helping the disadvantaged and protecting the environment.

Within the framework of the Ministry of Public Security's working trip to the Republic of South Sudan, the delegation and Vietnamese peacekeeping officers visited the Sheikh Dafalla Orphanage in the capital Juba. This place is currently taking care of nearly 200 children, of which 70% are orphans, the rest are children in especially difficult circumstances. Witnessing the serious shortage of electricity, water, and food, the delegation presented many practical gifts to the center such as 1,000 notebooks, iron bunk beds, mosquito nets, half a ton of rice and beans, etc.

Mr. Shiek Juma Ali, Manager of Sheikh Dafalla Center shared: “The books, pencils, and pens you bring are not only material but also hope and dreams of knowledge for the children here. You want to help them learn to read, write, and become people with a future. In addition, the support of food in this difficult time is extremely valuable.”

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Trong Nguyen, Deputy Commander of the Peacekeeping Police Unit No. 1 emphasized: “Our mission is to directly support people in areas where conflicts have occurred, while at the same time carrying on the peace-loving tradition of the People's Public Security Force and the Vietnamese people to support international friends. Even during the training process, we are always aware of the need to closely coordinate with local and local authorities to spread the humane values of the Peacekeeping Police Force.”

The GGHB officers also coordinated to organize peace painting with local children, implementing the program "accompanying the community". Thereby building the image of police officers who are not only strong in expertise but also full of compassion.

Not only do they bring professional skills, Vietnamese peacekeeping officers also bring with them kind hearts and a deep humanitarian spirit. Their practical actions and charitable gestures have left a deep impression on the hearts of local people, adding hope for a peaceful and better life. That is also the beautiful, humane image of Vietnamese soldiers in their journey to contribute to world peace.

In 1948, the United Nations designated May 29 as United Nations Peacekeeping Day to recognize the great contributions of this force to world peace and security. Over the past 77 years, more than 2 million officers and staff from 125 countries have served in UN peacekeeping missions, of which more than 3,000 have sacrificed their lives while on duty for world peace. Since 2014, Vietnam has sent more than 1,000 officers and soldiers to perform UN peacekeeping missions.
