Announcing the Vietnam Internet and Internet Resources Report 2024

After more than 27 years of global connection, Vietnam's internet has developed remarkably. From 1997 with only one network, the number has now grown to 1,148 networks, with independent IP and ASN connected to each other.

Vietnam's Internet is constantly developing strongly in terms of infrastructure, speed, security and ability to meet user needs, becoming an essential factor, integrated into all aspects of social life, an important infrastructure of digital transformation, contributing to the successful promotion of the country's industrialization and modernization process.

The journey of developing Vietnam's internet has always been marked by the parallel imprint of internet resources and important national internet infrastructure. With the desire to provide a panoramic picture of Vietnam's internet, serving the information and research work of experts, organizations and businesses, VNNIC publishes the Vietnam Internet and Internet Resources Report 2024 with the theme "Safe and sustainable internet infrastructure in the face of the development of new technologies".

The Internet is entering the smart era with the development of new technologies (IPv6, 5G/6G, IoT, AI, IDC/Cloud, SDN/NFV, Blockchain,...) leading to an explosion of connected devices, requiring the need to switch to the new generation of Internet addresses IPv6.

With a practical and effective development strategy and action plan, Vietnam is always at the forefront of converting the internet to the new generation IPv6. The IPv6 usage rate in Vietnam reached 65.5%, ranking second in ASEAN and the top 7 countries in the world (up 2 places compared to 2023), exceeding the annual target (65%). The total number of independent ASN networks is 864, the number of networks using independent IP is 1,148, exceeding the target for the period 2021-2025.

Developing the national domain name “.vn” into a national brand continues to be the strategic goal of VNNIC, closely following the orientation of the Information and Communications Infrastructure Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the official presence of the Vietnamese national domain name “.vn”, demonstrating national sovereignty in cyberspace. The number of “.vn” domain names reaches about 630,000, ranking second in ASEAN, 10th in Asia-Pacific, and 40th globally (up six places compared to 2020).

In particular, implementing the Program to popularize the Vietnamese national domain name ".vn" in 2024, according to Decision No. 826/QD-BTTTT dated May 21, 2024 of the Ministry of Information and Communications, VNNIC has coordinated with 63 Departments of Information and Communications of provinces and cities to simultaneously promote the domain name ".vn" locally; in conjunction with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to launch the Online Presence Program with the national domain name "id.vn" for Vietnamese youth, youth organizations nationwide have jointly implemented a series of Unitour events to 25 universities, with the coordination of the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM), receiving positive responses from students nationwide.

By the end of November 2024, about 60 thousand domain names in the new domain name space such as “id.vn”, “io.vn”, “ai.vn”, “biz.vn” had been registered and used, reflecting the positive transformation of the community, towards maximizing the value of the national domain name “.vn” in the digital environment.

In addition, the core internet infrastructure operates stably with SLA (Service Level Agreement) performance reaching over 99.99%. About 845/1,148 IP address members of VNNIC participate in signing ROA/RPKI resources with an average deployment rate of 96.4%, significantly higher than the global (48%) and Asia (53%). With RPKI technology, the number of routing security incidents in 2024 in Vietnam decreased by 73% compared to the previous year. In addition, the DNS ROOT system deployed domestically has helped speed up domain name queries up to 5 times.

The publication of the Vietnam Internet and Internet Resources Report 2024 introduces the 25-year journey, in which VNNIC has developed strongly, organically integrated into the global Internet resource management structure. With the action message "Internet for All", the vision of "pioneering, leading the promotion of Vietnam's Internet development, connecting the region", VNNIC has become a companion with the development of Internet resources, important national Internet infrastructure, and the Vietnamese Internet community, striving to promote the safe and sustainable development of the national Internet, improving its ranking in the region and internationally.
