What did Princess Diana write in her love letters to Prince Charles?

Princess Diana married Prince Charles at the age of 20. Like any young bride, she hoped that she and her husband would have a long and happy life together.

When her 36-year-old husband turned cold, Princess Diana did not give up. The beautiful royal daughter-in-law poured all her heart into the paper, believing that if she wrote the right words and expressed them beautifully enough, she could bridge the gap between them.

For every letter sent, there was only silence in response. Diana, young and hopeful, wrote tender, yearning letters to her husband in the early years of their marriage. In them, she detailed her dreams for the future and whispered her feelings on the page in an attempt to rekindle their love.

However, Prince Charles never wrote back.

"It's sad to say that he never loved Diana and so he never returned the compliment. Charles is not romantic. He tries but he doesn't have a romantic bone in his body," said former royal butler Paul Burrell.

The night before her wedding day, July 29, 1981, Diana received a special letter and gift from her future husband.

She shared: "He sent me a beautiful ring the night before the wedding, with the Prince of Wales's feathers on it and a beautiful card.

Although the gift and letter were touching and left Diana "very much in love", Prince Charles was already in love with Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he married in 2005, eight years after Diana's tragic death in a car crash in Paris.

Princess Diana described her honeymoon with Charles as a "tremendous success" in a letter to her former family housekeeper in 1981. She later confessed that the trip was a nightmare.

According to royal author Penny Junor, who wrote the biography The Duchess, Prince Charles packed novels and art supplies for the couple's honeymoon. He hoped they would read books together and then discuss them in the evenings, but his new bride did not want to do that on their honeymoon and wanted to spend time with him.

"She hated bad books and felt offended when he preferred to bury his head in one of them rather than sit and talk to her," Junor said. "She also hated the fact that he would sit for hours at his easel, and they had many heated arguments."

In fact, one day, while Charles was painting on the deck of the Britannia, he returned to find Diana smashing her easel and art supplies to pieces.

They also argued about Charles wearing cufflinks that Camilla had given him, with the double Cs intertwined. Diana asked: "Camilla gave you those, didn't she?" He replied: "Then what's the problem? They were a gift from a friend." Diana later said: "We argued. Jealousy, extreme jealousy."

Years later, a royal servant stumbled upon a forgotten collection of letters hidden inside an old writing desk at Kensington Palace. The intimate handwriting lay dormant for decades, only to be discovered when palace staff moved furniture during renovations. They were desperate letters filled with the longing of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage.

"Diana never stopped trying. She loved Charles so much, but he never reciprocated that love and it devastated her," said a royal insider.

The letters reveal the heartbreaking truth about Diana's marriage - a woman who loved deeply, longed for true love but never found it.

Through her letters, Diana poured out all the secrets of her lonely heart. She wrote: "I miss you. Even when you are with me, I miss you. I wonder, do you ever feel the same way? Or is it just me, lost in this love, trying to understand what we have become?

I think about our wedding day and how it felt walking towards you – like I was walking into a dream, a fairy tale come true."

Another letter read: "Sometimes I watch you when you don't notice. You look away when I hold your hand. You nod politely when I say I love you, but you never say it back. Do you love me? Do you love me? Or am I just someone who walks beside you, playing the princess while you dream of another princess? If there is a part of your heart that belongs to me, please, tell me. I will wait for your answer."

King Charles and Camilla will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary on April 9. They are planning to spend the important day with a royal tour of Italy and Vatican City.

Former butler Burrell said: "It's amazing to think that this year is Charles and Camilla's 20th wedding anniversary. Charles made up for his lack of romance with Diana with Camilla. He was married and lived with Camilla longer than he was married to Princess Diana. It's amazing."
