( Bqp.vn ) - On the morning of May 28, in Hanoi, the Department of Foreign Affairs ( Ministry of National Defense ) held a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its traditional day (May 28, 1964 - May 28, 2024) and receive the First Class Military Exploit Medal.

Attending the ceremony were General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of National Defense; General Pham Van Tra, former Politburo member, former Secretary of the Central Military Party Committee (now the Central Military Commission), former Minister of National Defense; Senior Lieutenant General Pham Thanh Ngan, former Politburo member, former Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army; Comrade Le Hoai Trung, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central External Relations Commission; General Do Ba Ty, former member of the Party Central Committee, former Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, former Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, former Deputy Minister of National Defense; Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Party Central Committee member, Deputy Minister of National Defense; Senior Lieutenant General Trinh Van Quyet, Party Central Committee member, Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army; Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

Also attending were leaders of Central Committees, Ministries and Branches; former leaders of the Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army. On the international side, there were ambassadors, representatives of international organizations and military attachés in Vietnam.

Authorized by the President, General Phan Van Giang awarded the First Class Military Exploit Order to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

At the ceremony, authorized by the President, General Phan Van Giang awarded the First Class Military Exploit Order to the Foreign Affairs Department for its outstanding achievements in combat, combat service, training, force building, strengthening national defense, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.

Acknowledging and praising the achievements and results of the Foreign Affairs Department over the past 60 years, General Phan Van Giang said that throughout the 60-year history, officers, employees and soldiers of the Foreign Affairs Department through the periods have thoroughly grasped the Party and State's guidelines, viewpoints, policies and foreign policies; creatively applied Ho Chi Minh's ideology and diplomatic style, resolutions, directives and orders of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense; closely followed the political tasks of the Army through each revolutionary stage.

To successfully complete the tasks in the new period, General Phan Van Giang requested the Department of Foreign Affairs to promote the pioneering role of defense diplomacy in maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for national construction and development, contributing to enhancing the position, role and prestige of Vietnam and the Vietnam People's Army in the international arena. Along with that, the Department of Foreign Affairs needs to proactively research and propose solutions, improve the effectiveness of international integration and defense diplomacy activities, contribute to protecting the Fatherland early and from afar by peaceful means; focus on further deepening the strategy and tactics for implementing defense diplomacy work on both bilateral and multilateral levels.

General Phan Van Giang also emphasized that the Foreign Affairs Department needs to raise awareness of the relationship between the country's real strength and foreign affairs potential; creatively apply Ho Chi Minh's ideology, style, and diplomatic art in the process of performing international integration and defense diplomacy tasks; especially being steadfast in principles, flexible in strategies, and maintaining independence and autonomy in defense relations and cooperation.

In his commemorative speech, Major General Vu Thanh Van, Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that throughout the 60-year journey of construction, development and growth, from wartime to peacetime, the steadfast revolutionary qualities of the Department of Foreign Affairs' cadres have always been a continuous flow, creating the tradition of "Loyalty - strategy - solidarity - initiative - creativity". The Department of Foreign Affairs has proactively grasped the situation, promptly advised the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense to lead and direct the comprehensive and synchronous implementation of defense foreign affairs activities and achieved many important results, contributing to firmly protecting independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, consolidating the peaceful and friendly border; facilitating the promotion of exchanges, connections, and development cooperation, deserving to be the leading agency in defense foreign affairs of the entire army.

With its achievements and results, the Department of Foreign Affairs has been honored to receive many noble awards from the Party, State, and Ministry of National Defense; and has been awarded many noble state medals by partner countries and traditional friends.

60 years ago, on May 28, 1964, the Department of Foreign Relations was established under Decision No. 62/QD-QP of the Minister of National Defense of Vietnam. On September 4, 1989, in response to the need to expand relations and cooperation with international friends, the Department of Foreign Relations was renamed the Department of Foreign Relations (Ministry of National Defense), under Decision No. 259/QD-QP of the Minister of National Defense, with the function of being the leading agency in advising, managing, guiding and organizing the implementation of military and defense foreign affairs activities in the Army, under the direct command of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense.
