The book can be considered a continuation of the inspiration from the work Saigon phong vi bao xuan xua by writer Pham Cong Luan, which includes a section on caricatures in spring magazines before 1975. Caricatures in Saigon newspapers before 1975 delves into caricatures in the Southern press in the past, and it can be said that this is the first elaborate study on this topic to be published. The book is quite large and heavy, with large printed pages. Pham Cong Luan said that at first he did not intend to make a large-sized book, but in the process of searching for documents, he realized that many old Saigon newspapers devoted an entire page to caricatures, so he decided to choose this book size to display those series of pictures.

Writer and journalist Pham Cong Luan

The author opens the book with a reminiscence of his childhood: "Since 1971, I was happy to be able to see cartoons and caricatures regularly in the weekly Thieu Nhi newspaper, and was very fond of the two characters Ti Xiu and Ti Ti drawn by Vuong Nghiem and Nguyen Tai. My father bought two daily newspapers, Song Than and Dien Tin, each of which had cartoons. I cannot forget the evenings when my father and my neighbor, Uncle Muoi Tho, sat together with a tiny glass of five-leaf ivy wine, commenting on current events and mentioning the cartoons of Tuyt, Choe, Ot... names that were quite funny but the satirical drawings were very profound ." It can be seen that cartoons and caricatures in the newspaper became a favorite spiritual food for both adults and children at that time.

The book consists of two parts. The first part, Journey of Caricature in Southern Press, provides an overview to help readers better understand the emergence and development stages of the caricature genre in Vietnamese press.

Part two is Caricature Artists in Saigon Newspapers before 1975 , which introduces the full background, highlights the personal style, and impressive works of a number of caricature artists and illustrators in newspapers. Readers will learn more about artist But Son - the father of the character Xa Xe; Hoang Lap Ngon specializes in sketching portraits of artists in the "tuong tinh hoa" style with large, rough, and individualistic strokes; artist Hung Hoi was highly appreciated by journalists and artists in the 1940s; artist Van Hieu was loved through the series of paintings Be Ngon - Be Luan ; artist Vuong Nghiem and the series of paintings Ti Xiu , Nguyen Tai with the series of paintings Ti Ti through the lens of Uncle Sau Rau , artist Ot (Huynh Ba Thanh) attacking politicians, artist Choe (Nguyen Hai Chi) whose caricatures were published in The New York Times, Newsweek ...
