When Literature Tells Historical Stories – A New Way to Love Literature and Understand History

How to make learning Literature no longer a dry class? How to feel literature not only through the lectures of teachers but also through the vivid slices of national history? The workshop “Learning Literature through historical stories” organized by Puss In Books Club is the most vivid and practical response to these concerns.

For many years, studying Literature in schools has often been "framed" in terms of analyzing structure, layout or test-taking skills. Many students consider Literature a "sensual" and unrealistic subject, especially when they do not see the connection between literary works and what has happened and is happening in life. That leads to a reality: students are indifferent to works that were once the voice of an era, a nation.

Therefore, the workshop "Learning Literature through Historical Stories" organized by Puss In Books Club recently brought a completely new perspective: literature is not only the art of language, but also a place to preserve the historical memories of the nation. Each verse, each sentence, each character in the work is a "witness of time", recounting moments that have shaken the hearts of many generations.

Overview of the Workshop "Learning Literature through Historical Stories" with poet Tran Dang Khoa and poet Bao Ngoc.

The workshop "Learning Literature through Historical Stories" by Puss In Books Club received enthusiastic responses from parents and students from schools in Hanoi such as: Hanoi Amsterdam High School, Specialized Language School, Son Tay High School, Nguyen Hue High School, Chu Van An...

In particular, with the participation of poet Tran Dang Khoa and poet Bao Ngoc ( Vietnam Writers Association ), the event is a multi-generational conversation, where the past and present come together to continue telling stories that never get old. Poet Bao Ngoc, with her simple and profound writing style, shares her creative journey and how she incorporates real events into her works. Through that, attendees clearly see how a writer "breathes life" into each setting and character, turning seemingly dry historical milestones into emotional and authentic pages of writing.

The whole audience listened attentively to the sharing of poet Tran Dang Khoa.

During the workshop, parents and students listened to poet Tran Dang Khoa share about his work Dao Chom. Through the poet's story, participants learned more about his creative process, as well as the days he lived and wrote on Dao Chom.

The book "Sinking Island" by author Tran Dang Khoa, published in 2000, became a publishing phenomenon with a record number of reprints up to the 52nd time. "Sinking Island" is highly appreciated for its content and writing style, especially for its authenticity in depicting the lives and camaraderie of soldiers in Truong Sa.

Diem Quynh (student of Nguyen Gia Thieu High School) said that before knowing the work "Sunk Islands", she still thought that the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos were very far away, very large - belonging to the national strategy... Until she read each page written by Mr. Khoa - and suddenly everything seemed very close. So close that she could hear through the pages of the book the sound of the waves, the sound of the wind, and even the sigh of the soldier guarding the island when he missed home on New Year's Eve. There is a sentence in the work that she will always remember: "I drop anchor so that the Fatherland will not drift away." Behind the seemingly gentle saying, she realized: protecting this country is not only about glorious feats, but also about silent actions - scooping sand, carrying water, standing guard in storms.

From the stories told by poet Tran Dang Khoa about soldiers on Truong Sa island, the way soldiers catch the waves and bond with animals like pigs and dogs in the bare remote island,... Nguyen Chi Mai (Grade 10, Hanoi Amsterdam High School - leader of Puss In Books Club) believes that the work Sunken Island is extremely authentic, without any embellishment.

Poet Tran Dang Khoa and poet Bao Ngoc took souvenir photos with parents and students.

Ms. Tram Mai, a parent, emotionally shared: "This is the first time I and my child participated in the workshop "Learning Literature with Historical Stories". I am very happy to accompany my child, learn with my child and grow up with my child from simple things like this".

Literature and history – two seemingly separate worlds – are now naturally and closely connected through the guidance of storytellers. Programs like this, when organized regularly as extracurricular activities, will become an exciting and suitable approach for students to love literature and history without feeling bored. The theme “Learning Literature through Historical Stories” opens up a new path, inspiring young people who love literature, are passionate about history or simply want to broaden their creative perspective in studying and life./.
