Veterans effectively raise goby fish

Việt NamViệt Nam18/02/2025

Ca Mau Newspaper In recent times, promoting the spirit of self-reliance, boldly converting crops and livestock, and applying science and technology to production, the Veterans Association at all levels of Tran Van Thoi district has implemented many effective models. A typical example is the commercial goby fish farming model of Mr. Nguyen Dang Khoa (Tam Khoa) in Lung Thuoc hamlet, Loi An commune.

With more than ten years of experience in raising climbing perch, veteran Nguyen Dang Khoa has a clear understanding of the characteristics of this fish species. Mr. Khoa rotates between raising shrimp and climbing perch depending on the season and price. Taking advantage of the times when the shrimp ponds are empty due to low prices, Mr. Khoa boldly raises climbing perch, with 5 ponds, each pond is over 1,000 m2 plus 1 settling pond to change the water. From practical experience, combined with the veteran's determination, in the last crop, after more than 4 months of raising, with fish measuring 38 fish/kg, Mr. Khoa harvested 1 pond with 1.7 tons, priced at 145,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, he still made a profit of more than 200 million VND.

Goby fish are easy to raise, less risky and less capital intensive than shrimp farming. Feeding is done 3 times a day. When the fish reach a size of 40 fish/kg, the feeding is reduced to 2 times a day. According to Mr. Khoa's experience, before releasing the fish, the pond must be fertilized, then limed, dried for about 2 days, and water used for raising. The process of raising goby fish also has fewer diseases, is less demanding than shrimp farming, and does not require fans, so it is less costly.

The difficulty in raising climbing perch is the source of fish fry. Currently, Mr. Khoa has to buy fish fry in Nguyen Viet Khai commune, Phu Tan district, because the district does not have a stable source of fish fry. This makes the source of fish fry scarce and the price of fish fry high. They only wait for the source of fish fry from the wild, so the farming season is not continuous and not proactive. Currently, the Veterans Association of Tran Van Thoi district is promoting and improving the quality of the "Exemplary Veterans" movement associated with the movement of veterans helping each other develop the economy , reduce poverty, and get rich with practical and diverse models. During the farming process, anyone who needs support for fish fry, food, fertilizer, and medicine, Mr. Khoa enthusiastically helps.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Khoa excitedly said: "I have been raising goby fish for over 10 years, but I stopped for a few years due to the price drop. Now, raising it again is highly effective and the profit is higher than shrimp, so I switched to raising goby fish and at the same time, I have guided my neighbors to raise it and achieve results."

Mr. Nguyen Van Bac, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Loi An commune, informed: "Over the years, Mr. Khoa has always supported people, expanding the goby fish farming model to develop the household economy together."

Veterans’ associations are actively encouraging and motivating members to develop their economies. The effectiveness of veteran Nguyen Dang Khoa’s model of using industrial shrimp ponds to raise climbing goby fish shows that if people know how to use abandoned ponds to raise climbing goby fish, it will open up new prospects, bring high efficiency, help people escape poverty and have sustainable income./.
