The temporary landfill is located in Tan Xuyen Ward, Ca Mau City, with a scale of 38,000 m2, and can temporarily store garbage for about the next 10 days. This is the only temporary landfill in the city. In the coming days, if the waste treatment plant is still closed, this landfill will also be overloaded.
Mr. Nguyen Lam Nha, Head of Service Department, Ca Mau Urban Environment Joint Stock Company, said: “Since last night, the unit's workers have been working all night to deal with the backlog of more than 100 tons of garbage in the inner city area. Currently, the city area discharges about 160 tons of garbage every day, the factory's suspension of operations is creating great pressure on the company. For now, the unit only allows workers to collect and bring it to a temporary landfill, then proceed to treat the odor according to regulations, the next steps of treatment are still waiting for the direction of the Provincial People's Committee".
In Tran Van Thoi district, this morning the locality also operated a temporary landfill in Hamlet 5, Tran Van Thoi town, with a scale of 2,500 m2. In the immediate future, this landfill will solve the problem of domestic waste for Tran Van Thoi town and Song Doc town, with about 15 tons of waste per day and can maintain operation for about 1-2 months.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ca Mau province, as of this afternoon (June 18), the whole province has operated 7 temporary landfills, of which 6 are in the districts, only Dam Doi and Phu Tan districts do not have temporary landfills. Providing more information about the situation of waste congestion in recent days, Mr. Do Viet Khoa, Head of the Environmental Protection Department, Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ca Mau province, said that Cong Ly Construction - Trade - Tourism Company Limited has not completed the price plan to submit to the competent authority for approval. Previously, the price plan for waste treatment at Ca Mau City Waste Treatment Plant was appraised by the Department of Agriculture and Environment on April 24, 2025. However, due to some contents with different opinions between the Appraisal Team and Cong Ly Company, which have not been agreed upon, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has sent it back to the Company for completion, but so far there has been no response from the unit.
Mr. Khoa also said that the Department of Agriculture and Environment is recommending the Provincial People's Committee to request Cong Ly Company to continue receiving and processing this amount of waste at the Ca Mau City Waste Treatment Plant while waiting for the issuance of temporary unit prices for domestic waste treatment, in order to ensure environmental sanitation conditions in the province.
Up to now, the Ca Mau City Waste Treatment Plant is the only specialized waste treatment unit in Ca Mau province. Since its operation, the unit has repeatedly requested to temporarily stop receiving waste for various reasons. This time, if we continue to wait for unit prices, the risk of "breaking out" at temporary landfills is very high.
