Veteran shrimp farmer... good

Việt NamViệt Nam17/01/2024

After completing his military service, in 1994, Mr. Phan Hieu Nghia returned to his hometown to start a family. His family's economy was difficult, so he worked as a hired hand every day to earn an income to support his family. Taking advantage of the rice fields behind his house, he converted them into extensive shrimp farming, but it was not effective and the profits were low.

In 2019, Mr. Nghia invested nearly 1.2 billion VND to rent and renovate 8,000m² of industrial shrimp ponds; in which, he invested in building a net cover system, installing a pond bottom oxygen supply system, lining the pond floor with tarpaulin, installing a drainage system...

Having no capital, Mr. Nghia borrowed money from the Social Policy Bank to continue improving the water source and buy shrimp seeds to release. With the determination to work and gain experience, Mr. Nghia diligently studied and researched about seeds, food, and water sources when raising industrial shrimp, so that the shrimp grew quickly and had little loss.

Mr. Phan Hieu Nghia, residing in group 5, Hoa Phau hamlet, Thuan Yen commune, Ha Tien city ( Kien Giang ) checks the water source for shrimp farming.

According to Mr. Phan Hieu Nghia, to be successful in industrial shrimp farming, the seed and clean water source are the decisive factors. Good, disease-free seed and a clean water environment in the pond will help the shrimp grow well and have few diseases.

“To raise shrimp effectively, I divide it into 3 ponds for easy management. I treat the water pumped from the sea into pond 1, and the treated water that meets the requirements is transferred to pond 2. I buy shrimp fry and release them into pond 2 for 30-45 days. When the shrimp grow well, I transfer them to pond 3,” Mr. Nghia shared.

With a hard-working spirit, Mr. Nghia escaped poverty through the industrial shrimp farming model. Each year, Mr. Nghia raises 3 shrimp crops, each crop after deducting expenses, he earns a profit of over 700 million VND. Near the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin in 2024, Mr. Nghia sells shrimp for 150,000 VND/kg, earning over 200 million VND.

“Thanks to industrial shrimp farming, my family escaped poverty and became more prosperous. In the future, I will continue to maintain the industrial shrimp farming model, in which I apply science and technology to shrimp care to save costs and bring higher efficiency,” said Mr. Nghia.

Mr. Nghia regularly shares his shrimp farming experience with many veteran members in difficult circumstances in the locality. Up to now, the rate of poor households among veterans in the commune has decreased year by year. “In addition to efforts to develop the family economy, veteran Phan Hieu Nghia regularly shares industrial shrimp farming techniques with members and local people. The industrial shrimp farming model has been widely replicated among veteran members, many of whom have escaped poverty through this model,” said Nguyen Van Thong, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Thuan Yen Commune.
