President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded former Chancellor Angela Merkel the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit (Großkreuz) for her exceptional achievements over 16 years, with four terms as head of government .
Ms. Merkel, 68 years old, is the first female Chancellor of Germany. She has made a strong impression as a powerful female politician , having a profound influence not only on Germany but also on the European Union (EU) and the world. Before resigning in December 2021, she was considered a "monument" of Europe, after leading the largest economy of the "old continent" to overcome a series of crises, including the global financial crisis; Eurozone debt crisis; migrant crisis. In addition to the brand of "crisis management expert", Ms. Merkel is also known for her great contributions to minimizing the causes of climate change and the EU's general direction in its strategy to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and the Brexit crisis (Britain leaving the EU).
Ms Merkel did not seek a fifth term and ended her tenure as Germany's second-longest-serving leader after World War II, just 10 days shy of leader Helmut Kohl's record.
