Former Indonesian national team secretary Ricky Riskandi, who once served as assistant coach to Shin Tae-yong, believes the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) dismissed the South Korean coach too hastily. He argues that Shin Tae-yong laid a solid foundation for the team, but was replaced by Patrick Kluivert before it could be fully realized, leading to the team's failure to qualify for the World Cup.
The former assistant coach argued that Kluivert's failure stemmed not from tactics, but from a lack of accumulated experience and in-depth understanding of the team. He asserted that if Shin Tae-yong were given another chance, his chances of success would be very high, because he understands the system and the players well and has directly selected many of the current players, including the group of naturalized players.

"In terms of technique and tactics, I don't really trust him. Every coach has their own strengths, but Kluivert didn't have the time to understand players like Shin Tae-yong, who was with him for 5 years," Ricky shared on Bicara Bola.
Ricky stated that PSSI should have been more patient because under Shin's leadership, the Indonesian national team was gradually stabilizing and showing clear progress. The appointment of Kluivert raised doubts from the start. "The team is like a flower that's about to bloom, but before it can bear fruit, it's been picked. It's a pity, as if the Indonesian team withered before it even had a chance to grow," Ricky added.
Ricky Riskandi also shared many interesting stories about the South Korean strategist in this interview.
He said that in 2020, he was tasked by PSSI with welcoming and assisting coach Shin Tae-yong and his assistants upon their arrival in Jakarta, Indonesia. This task was assigned directly by Ratu Tisha, then the PSSI Secretary General. “At that time, Ms. Tisha told me that Mr. Shin was a top coach in Asia, who had led South Korea to the 2018 World Cup and defeated Germany,” Ricky recalled.

Ricky believes that the replacement of coach Shin Tae-yong by Patrick Kluivert was suspicious from the start.
In addition, the former assistant coach of the Indonesian national team frankly commented that Shin Tae-yong is cheerful, open, and humorous, but not everyone finds it easy to work with him.
“Coach Shin is very friendly, but it would be difficult to work with someone who is too sensitive or easily offended. He often jokes around like a father to his son. He is genuinely humble and approachable,” Ricky shared.
Although this assistant believes that coach Shin Tae-yong should be given another chance with the Indonesian national team, PSSI President Erick Thohir has stated that the South Korean strategist has no chance of returning to this role.
